Hostel M

Hostel M sits at Iztokova ulica 22 in Studenci, the green residential district on the right (south) bank of the Drava — about 15 minutes on foot to Glavni trg via the Stari most pedestrian bridge, or a 4-stop bus ride (lines 3, 6, 8) from Trg svobode if you don't fancy the walk back uphill at midnight. The trade-off is real: you lose the at-the-door centrality of CafDorm or the train-station-adjacency of B&B UNI Hostel, and you get a quiet, green, almost-suburban setting in exchange.

The building is a 1970s brick block heavily renovated in 2017 — the bones are basic but the finishes are clean, the windows are double-glazed, and every dorm has a window that opens onto either the garden or the Iztokova-side trees. There are two floors of dorms (4, 6, 8-bed mixed), a small cluster of private doubles and triples, and a ground-floor cafeteria-style dining room that doubles as breakfast room and shared lounge.

The garden is the unique feature: a fenced-in lawn with a half-court for basketball and volleyball (free for guests, balls available at reception), a covered seating area where the hostel runs a barbecue most Friday evenings in summer, and a small playground that makes Hostel M one of the only credible family options in town. Bikes for hire (€8/day) live in a shed at the back; the cycle path along the Drava starts five minutes east.

The right call for travellers who want quiet, green, and family-friendly with parking, and who are happy to commute the 15 minutes to centre. If you want bar-crawl-walking-distance, Hostel Pekarna or CafDorm are the move; if you want the cheapest central option, MINIDORM or 4 Rooms on Glavni trg are it.
