§ 01 — Summary

Pod-style hostel on Parliament Square, literally next to St Giles' Cathedral and 90 seconds' walk from Edinburgh Castle. Converted from a building attached to the Court of Session, with 250-ish pods across four floors plus a vaulted basement bar. The most central address of any hostel in Edinburgh.

§ 02 — The full story

CODE - The Court sits on Parliament Square in Edinburgh Old Town, wedged between St Giles' Cathedral and the working Court of Session — the building was literally court chambers before the conversion in 2019. You cannot sleep closer to the Castle without buying a timeshare: it's a 90-second walk up the Royal Mile to the Esplanade, and the same 90 seconds down West Bow to the Grassmarket pub circuit.

Beds are pods, not bunks. Each pod has a proper mattress (not the foam slabs you get in budget pods elsewhere), a reading light, two USB sockets, a UK three-pin socket, a privacy curtain, and noticeably better soundproofing than the CODE Loft sister property on Rose Street. The mixed-gender pod dorms run from 8 to 24 beds; there are female-only pod rooms and a handful of twin pods for couples who want cheaper than a hotel but with some privacy.

The vaulted basement bar is the social core — built into the original court cellars, stone walls, house DJ on weekends, nightly pub-crawl meetup at 9 pm led by in-house staff, breakfast included until 10 am (cereal, toast, porridge, filter coffee — not gourmet but it saves you £8 at Pret). Upstairs there's a quiet lounge with Wi-Fi strong enough to actually work from.

Reviewers flag two things: the common room can fill up on weekends, which means if you check in late there's nowhere quiet to sit without going back to your pod, and the building has strict 11 pm noise rules in corridors (you're next to working court chambers — the police enforce). It's not a party hostel in the Kick Ass Grassmarket sense; CODE is for solo travelers and couples who want pod luxury, the best Old Town address in the city, and a curated crawl rather than a free-for-all.
