Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
Princes Street Hostel wins on one thing: transit. If you're catching an early train out of Waverley or a first-bus to the airport, no other hostel in Edinburgh puts you this close. The kitchen is properly stocked, the bunks are decent, and the staff are transit-experienced โ they'll call you a taxi at 5 am without complaint. Skip it if you want the Old Town atmosphere of Castle Rock or the pod engineering of CODE; Princes Street Hostel is the practical choice, not the romantic one. Couple tip: the private double rooms face the quiet West Register Street side and are genuinely good value at under ยฃ90.
๐ฏ Insider Tips
- 1Ask for a dorm on the West Register Street side โ the Princes Street-facing rooms get tram noise until midnight and traffic noise from 5:30 am.
- 2The kitchen has a guest-pantry shelf where previous travellers leave oil, pasta, rice and spices โ don't buy these on arrival, check the shelf first.
- 3For the Airlink 100 to the airport, the closest stop is Waverley Bridge, three minutes downhill from the hostel. First bus is 4:30 am; buy tickets in advance on the app for ยฃ5.50.
- 4The Cafรฉ Royal oyster bar is genuinely one of Edinburgh's best โ half a dozen oysters ยฃ16, and it's literally the next building. Arrive before 6 pm to avoid the dinner queue.
๐ฅ Why We Love It
Two minutes' walk from Waverley Station โ the most transit-smart Edinburgh hostel
Properly-stocked shared kitchen with guest-pantry basics
West Register Street is pedestrian-only, so the entrance is always quiet
Chill-out lounge has a pool table, book exchange and Netflix TV
Private doubles are genuinely good value under ยฃ90, a rare Edinburgh find
๐ The Full Story
Princes Street Hostel sits on West Register Street, the quiet pedestrianised cut-through that links Princes Street to the Cafรฉ Royal at the back of the New Club โ which means the front door is 60 seconds from Princes Street but the street itself is car-free and never rowdy. It's the most practical address in Edinburgh if you're moving on: Waverley Station (trains to London, Glasgow, Inverness) is a two-minute walk downhill, the Airlink 100 bus stop is at Waverley Bridge three minutes away, and the bus 26 to Portobello beach stops on North Bridge.
The building is Georgian, five floors, roughly 130 beds in 4, 6, 8 and 10-bed mixed dorms plus female-only dorms and a few private doubles. Bunks are wooden-frame, each with an under-bunk locker and a reading light, and the third-floor dorms have the best Princes Street gardens views โ ask at check-in.
The shared kitchen is the social hub: four hobs, two ovens, three fridges, stocked with basics (pasta, oil, salt, pepper, tea) that previous guests have left behind. The chill-out lounge has a pool table, Netflix-equipped TV, and a book exchange. No bar on-site, but the Standing Order Wetherspoon is 40 seconds out the door and the Cafรฉ Royal (Edinburgh's best oyster bar, surprisingly not expensive) is the next building over.
Reviewers flag the stairs (five floors, no lift), the bathroom-to-bed ratio in peak festival season, and the fact that the Princes Street tram line runs right outside โ the bedrooms on the Princes Street side catch tram noise until midnight. Ask for a West Register Street-facing room. The big win here is the location for transit travellers: no other Old Town hostel is this close to Waverley, and if you're catching an early train to the Highlands or a 6 am Airlink bus to the airport, Princes Street Hostel buys you an extra 20 minutes in bed.
