Kolpinghaus Salzburg - SommerHOSTEL
Summer-only Catholic-foundation hostel — riverside Itzling, hotel-grade privates, free parking, real breakfast included from €35
Kolpinghaus is a Catholic-foundation student hall that opens its rooms to travelers as the SommerHOSTEL from late June to early September. Riverside Itzling location, hotel-grade private rooms with TV and shower, free parking, and the same proper Austrian breakfast you'd pay €15 for at a hotel — for €35 a night during the months when central Salzburg triples its prices.
Kolpinghaus Salzburg sits at Adolf-Kolping-Straße 10 in Itzling, a quiet residential neighborhood on the north bank of the Salzach. It's a year-round Kolping student dormitory that converts into the SommerHOSTEL from roughly June 25 to September 5 — the exact dates students are away. Outside that window, you can't book it. During the window, it's one of Salzburg's smartest budget plays: hotel-grade private rooms with TV, private shower-toilet, kettle, free parking, and a proper breakfast included in the rate.
The building sleeps around 250 across single, double, twin and triple rooms — almost no dorms. Rooms are simple-modern: laminate floors, wardrobe, desk, single or double bed, private shower-toilet, free Wi-Fi. Doubles facing the river get morning sun and a quiet view; courtyard-side rooms are darker but cheaper. There is a small sun terrace on the river side, a chapel (the building is Catholic-foundation, but no religious requirements for guests), and a TV lounge.
The ground-floor restaurant doubles as a bar in the evening (5-22h, Stiegl draft €4, simple Austrian dishes €8-15). Breakfast is included in every rate and is the proper Austrian buffet — eggs, cold cuts, four breads, müsli, fruit, decent coffee — served 7-9 am in the dining room. Free parking for cars and motorhomes. Bus 21 stops 4 min away and runs to the Hauptbahnhof in 8 min and the Old Town in 18 min. Reviewers consistently note the surprise of how hotel-like it feels for the price, the quality of the breakfast, and the genuine quiet at night. The flip side: summer-only operation, 12 min walk to the Hauptbahnhof, no real common-area scene.
- 01It exists because of an old Catholic foundation pattern — student dorm in winter, hostel in summer — and the result is a hotel-quality room at hostel prices for exactly the months Salzburg is most expensive.
- 02Free breakfast included in the rate is genuinely the best in Salzburg's hostel circuit. €15-20 saved per person per day vs. paying breakfast à la carte at central cafés.
- 03Free parking is the practical perk that decides things for road-trippers. Central Salzburg parking is €25-35 a day in garages; Kolpinghaus parking is included.
- 04The riverside walk south to Augustiner Bräu Mülln is the prettiest hostel-to-pub commute in Salzburg — 12 min along the Salzach with the Festung Hohensalzburg above the trees.
- 05Reception is genuinely helpful in an old-school way — the Front Desk staff get named in dozens of reviews for booking the Sound of Music tour, the Hellbrunn ticket, the Untersberg cable car combo.
- Summer-only opening (June 25 – Sept 5) — hotel-grade rooms at hostel prices during Salzburg Festival
- Free proper Austrian breakfast included in every rate (eggs, cold cuts, four breads, fruit)
- Free parking for cars and motorhomes — rare for a near-central Salzburg property
- Riverside Itzling location — 12 min walk to Hauptbahnhof, 22 min along Salzach to Old Town
“I was slightly unsure about this accommodation as it was a 'hostel' but we were very impressed as it was effectively a hotel with a great room, good breakfast, and a friendly chap on the Front Desk gave us some great tips. We saved money by going for it.”
“It's so lovely, doesn't look like a hostel at all. It's really really clean, has a great reception and everyone was very kind.”
“A really big parking lot. Dog friendly. Super breakfast. Very friendly staff. Easy walk along the river to the centre.”
