Stadtalm Naturfreundehaus sits on top of the Mönchsberg, the 540-metre forested cliff that rises out of the centre of Salzburg directly above the Old Town. The address is Mönchsberg 19c — a 12-minute uphill walk from Toscaninihof in the Old Town, or a 90-second Mönchsbergaufzug lift ride (€3.40 single) followed by a 4-minute level walk. From the hostel terrace you look straight down at the Cathedral, Mozart's birthplace, Getreidegasse and the Festung Hohensalzburg ramparts. There is no other Salzburg property with this view at any price.
The building is a converted 1890s naturalist-society mountain hut (Naturfreunde — "Friends of Nature" — is an Austrian outdoor club). It sleeps around 30 across mixed dorms (4-bed, 8-bed) and a few private singles and doubles. The rooms are simple-rustic: wood-panelled walls, single beds with thick blankets, shared bathrooms on each floor with hot showers. Eva's review specifically calls out the room decor: "every single room was decorated with a lot of taste and love." There is no elevator and no luggage trolley — you carry your bag up.
The ground-floor restaurant (open 11-22h, last orders 21h) is the social heart of the property. The fireplace dining room serves typical Austrian dishes (Tafelspitz €18, Schnitzel €16, Tiroler Gröstl €13) and a small but proper beer list (Stiegl draft €4.20, Weisse €4.80). The garden seats around 40 outside in summer, and the panorama from the garden is the same as from the rooms — Salzburg from above. There is no breakfast service (€10 add-on if requested at booking), no in-house bar after 22h, and no party scene. This is a hut hostel for nature people, not a backpacker bar pick.
