Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
Sleep Well is the Brussels hostel you pick when you want a kitchen, a garden, and proof that a place has been doing this long enough to get it right. It's not boutique, it's not quiet, and the 8-bed front dorms catch Friday-night noise from Rue du Damier, but for 31 EUR inside the Pentagon with a shared kitchen and a small garden, it's the most useful hostel in Brussels. If you're a light sleeper, pay the extra 3 EUR for a 6-bed or a private twin โ the upper floors face Jardin Botanique and the concert hall garden, not the bar-return route. If you want a social hostel over a quiet one, this is the place โ the bar + board games room is where the actual mingling happens, not the dorms.
๐ฏ Insider Tips
- 1Ask for an upper-floor room. Anything on the second or third floor facing Jardin Botanique is noticeably quieter, especially Friday and Saturday when the Rue du Damier bars empty out around 01:30.
- 2Use the kitchen. Full hobs are rare in Brussels hostels at this price โ pick up supplies at Carrefour Express on Rue Neuve (7 min) and you'll eat for the price of one Grand Place menu.
- 3Book the breakfast only if you're an early riser. At 6.50 EUR it's decent but Charli bakery on Rue Sainte-Catherine (12 min walk) does better pastries for 3 EUR, and the hostel breakfast ends at 10:00.
- 4Garden beer, not hostel bar. The garden fills quietly from 20:00 to 23:00 and is where you'll meet people who actually talk. The bar itself is loud and runs on a playlist.
๐ฅ Why We Love It
16,000+ reviews and an 8.3 rating โ the most proven hostel in Brussels
Full shared kitchen with hobs and fridges, rare inside the Pentagon at this price
Small interior courtyard garden โ the only Brussels hostel with outdoor common space
Evening bar from 17:00, board games and table football in the lounge
5 min to Rogier metro (lines 2 + 6), 10 min walk to Grand Place via Rue Neuve
๐ The Full Story
Sleep Well sits on Rue du Damier at the top of the Pentagon, five minutes downhill from Rogier metro (lines 2 and 6) and ten from the Grand Place if you walk via Rue Neuve. It's the Brussels hostel with the longest track record โ 16,000+ reviews logged on Booking โ and the only one at this scale that's genuinely independent (not HI, not a chain).
The footprint is sprawling by Brussels standards: three floors of dorms and privates, a proper shared kitchen with four hobs and two fridges, a bar that opens from 17:00, a decent breakfast hall (6.50 EUR supplement), a common room with board games and table football, and a small interior courtyard garden that fills on sunny evenings. Housekeeping runs every morning. Linens and towels are included.
Dorm layouts are functional rather than boutique โ standard metal bunks with drawer-sized lockers, curtains optional. Upgrade to a 4-bed if you can; the 8-beds at the front of the building catch Rue du Damier bar-return noise on Friday and Saturday. Private rooms on the upper floors are quieter and include a small terrace view over the Jardin Botanique.
The clientele skews young โ school groups in shoulder seasons, 20-something backpackers the rest of the year. Night staff speak English, French, Dutch, some Spanish. It's not a quiet boutique stay, but for 31 EUR with a kitchen and a garden inside the Pentagon, very little beats it in Brussels.

โLocation was good, close to centre and attractions in walking distance. Dorm was clean but the 8-bed picks up bar noise Fridays.โ
