Hostel Sol reopened in spring 2024 after a full renovation on Obala Ivana Pavla II 13, the port-side road in Gruž directly across from where the Jadrolinija and Kapetan Luka ferries dock. It's 1 minute on foot from the main intercity bus station (where buses arrive from Split, Kotor, Mostar and the Čilipi airport), 3 minutes from the catamaran terminal, and 10 minutes by bus 1A/1B to Pile Gate.
The layout is compact: 30 beds across three 4-bed and two 6-bed mixed dorms plus a couple of privates. Every bunk has a reading light, privacy curtain and USB socket, the dorms have air conditioning (essential from June through September), and the en-suite bathrooms were all rebuilt in 2024 with tiled showers rather than the prefab plastic units most Gruž hostels still run. Lockers are underbed and fit a 60-litre pack.
Breakfast isn't included but the shared kitchen is stocked (stove, fridge, microwave, kettle, filter coffee) and the Konzum supermarket across the street opens at 7 am. There's a small sea-view terrace with four tables and a fridge bar (Karlovačko €3, house red wine €4) that runs on the honor system — staff grab a sheet on checkout.
Reviewers flag three points: the 2024 renovation (clean, no cruise-ship-era grime), the waterfront view from the terrace (full Gruž port panorama with the cable car up Srđ visible behind), and the staff running an informal 10 am walking tour to the Old Town on weekdays. It's the newest hostel in Dubrovnik at the under-€35 price point and the best choice for travelers arriving by bus or ferry who want to drop bags and be at Buza Bar in 25 minutes.
