10-Z Bunker
Sleep in a real Cold War nuclear bunker, 14°C and gas masks included
10-Z Bunker is a working hostel inside an actual Cold War nuclear fallout shelter, dug into the rock under Špilberk Castle in central Brno. Rooms hold a constant 14-18°C year round, the décor is period-correct gas masks and Soviet bedside tables, and a free guided history tour runs Tue-Sun at 19:00. Continental breakfast is served in the retro bar. Couples rate the location 9.5/10.
10-Z Bunker is the kind of hostel that doesn't show up in any other European city. It's an actual decommissioned nuclear fallout shelter dug into the rock under Špilberk Castle, kept exactly as it was when the communist Czechoslovak army handed it over: hand-cranked air-filtration wheels, period bunks, Soviet-era bedside tables, gas masks on the walls, retro bar in the former guard room. The constant temperature is 14-18°C — they hand you an extra blanket at check-in and the rooms have additional heating, but bring a hoodie regardless.
The stay includes the free guided exhibition tour about the bunker's Cold War history at 19:00 every Tuesday through Sunday — the same tour day-trippers pay 250 CZK for, comped because you're staying overnight. Various concerts and lectures happen in the bunker's main hall throughout the year (check the calendar at reception). Continental breakfast (bread, ham, cheese, jams, coffee) is served at the retro bar from 8am.
What to set expectations on: this is not a comfort-first hostel. Beds are functional, bathrooms are shared and basic, the temperature is genuinely cold by hostel standards, and parts of the shelter have low ceilings and tight corridors. Booking notes warn that claustrophobic guests and people with respiratory or allergy issues should pick a different property — that's not boilerplate, it's accurate. Couples score the experience higher than groups, probably because the rooms cap at twin/triple occupancy.
Who it's for: travelers who'd choose memorable over comfortable, history nerds, photographers, and anyone who reads 'sleep in a Cold War bunker' and immediately wants to. Who it's not for: light sleepers who need warm rooms, claustrophobics, families with young kids, and anyone whose ideal hostel is a rooftop bar in shorts.

“In an era where global tensions feel all too real, stepping into this Cold War relic was a sobering lesson in history and nuclear science. Living the underground life at a constant 14-18°C, surrounded by gas masks, vintage military gear, and the hum of preserved infrastructure, was unforgettable.”
“Very unique experience. Traditional rating criteria don't really apply here. For example there's a question 'How comfy were the beds?' — why would I expect it to be comfy in the first place? Not comfy is part of the experience. Staff were very informative and helpful.”
“It's a great experience and a great museum. There's no real comfort that is worth mentioning. But that is okay. The place is clean, and everything they provide works. Staff is friendly. So please come here if you get the chance. It's unique.”
