§ 01 — Summary

Ruta 80 Hostel is a 1980s-themed property on Jugoslávská in the student-heavy Veveří neighborhood, 15 minutes' walk from the old town with a tram stop directly outside. The hostel has a shared kitchen, terrace, games room with bowling and tennis, occasional live music nights, bicycle parking, and a garden. Owner Dario (Italian, ex-Sicily) shows up in roughly half the reviews by name.

§ 02 — The full story

Ruta 80 is the Brno hostel that doesn't try to be anything other than what it is: an unapologetic 1980s-themed property in the student quarter, run by an Italian owner who somehow ended up in Brno from Sicily and built the kind of place where the décor is wall-to-wall vintage cassette posters, the games room has both a bowling lane and a racquetball court, and the kitchen is fully kitted out for guests who want to cook.

The location is Jugoslávská in Veveří — the inner-ring neighborhood north of the old town, dense with cafes, students, the Veveří tram line (4/8/9) running until 23:00 and the night N89 hourly thereafter. You're 15-20 minutes' walk to Náměstí Svobody, or one tram stop. The tram stops directly outside the front door, which makes night returns from town painless.

Facilities are unusually rich for the price: shared kitchen with full appliances (stove, oven, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster, kitchenware), washing machine, soundproofed rooms, computer terminal, sofa beds in some private rooms, dining table, terrace and patio with deck chairs, board games and game console in the lounge, occasional live music in the games room, bicycle parking, and paid private parking on site (rare in Brno hostels).

What to set expectations on: the Veveří location is great for students and longer stays but adds 15 minutes of walking to every old-town outing — the tram makes this trivial during the day and manageable at night, but if you want literally zero walking from your hostel to a pub, pick John Galt or Hostel Eleven in the centre instead. The 1980s theme is genuinely committed; if you don't find it endearing, you'll find it loud.

Who it's for: solo travelers who want a real social hostel atmosphere, couples on longer stays who want a kitchen + terrace + character, students at MUNI/VUT who want a base in the student quarter, and anyone who wants to throw a board games night with strangers.

Everything... The place, the location, the equipment, facilities, and all. But most of all, the owner, Dario, such a cool, nice and helpful man, but then he's an Italian, coming from the isle of Sicily.

Cosy hostel themed with 1980s memorabilia. Lovely staff all the facilities you need and a fifteen minute walk to the old town or tram stop right outside. The bar nearby is cool.
