Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
Hostel Suomenlinna is the most distinctive bed in Helsinki and one of the few hostels in Europe inside a UNESCO World Heritage site โ and at 42 EUR a dorm with breakfast included, it costs less than a mid-tier mainland hotel. The pace here is the antithesis of city-centre Helsinki: silence after 22:00, an 800-person island that empties when the day-trippers ferry back at 18:00, and a stillness that pairs with a wood-fired sauna at Cafรฉ Vanille's neighbour. Pick it for one-to-three nights as part of a Helsinki visit, especially if you want a contrast to the Kallio bar scene; skip it if you need 24-hour metro access or are on a one-night Helsinki layover where 30 minutes of ferry transit each way will eat your time.
๐ฏ Insider Tips
- 1Buy the HSL day ticket at the airport or any R-Kioski (10 EUR) โ it covers trains, trams, metro, AND the Suomenlinna ferry. Single ferry tickets are 5.50 EUR, so the day ticket pays for itself in two rides.
- 2The last ferry from Suomenlinna leaves around 02:20 in summer and 23:30 in winter. Check the printed pier timetable on arrival; missing it costs 35 EUR for a water taxi.
- 3Cafรฉ Vanille closes at 19:00 in winter but has the best cinnamon buns on the island. Pizzeria Nikolai stays open till 22:00 โ the only late dinner option, so book ahead on summer Saturdays.
- 4Sunset on the King's Gate (Kuninkaanportti) ramparts on the south side is the postcard moment. 30 minutes' walk from the hostel; bring a windbreaker โ even July evenings drop below 12ยฐC with the sea wind.

๐ The Full Story
Hostel Suomenlinna occupies a converted 1854 garrison building on Suomenlinna's central courtyard, three minutes' walk from the main ferry pier. The hostel is part of HI Finland (Hostelling International) and run on the gentler, slower rhythm of an island guesthouse โ bookable as dorm beds, twin rooms, or family rooms with garden views over the fortress walls.
The building keeps its original parquet floors, high ceilings, and a thick-walled silence you don't get on the mainland. Rooms are simple: wooden bunks or twin beds, work desks, wardrobes, en-suite or shared shower depending on type. The kitchen is the hub โ induction hobs, dining table, free coffee morning till 10:00, and a notice board where guests trade ferry-schedule tips and trail recommendations.
Suomenlinna itself is the reason you book. The island is genuinely lived-in: 800 residents, a working dry dock from 1750, the Sukellusvene Vesikko submarine museum, six fortress sub-islands connected by bridges, and a single waterfront restaurant (Cafรฉ Vanille) plus the Pizzeria Nikolai for evenings. Sundown walks along the King's Gate ramparts are the standard guest move; mornings often start with seal-spotting from the southern cliffs.
The ferry runs every 20 minutes from Market Square (HSL day ticket covers it) and the last boat leaves Suomenlinna for the city around 02:20 in summer, 23:30 in winter. Check the current timetable at the pier โ missing the last boat means a 35 EUR water-taxi or sleeping on the ferry pier. Worth knowing.
