The Yard Hostel sits on Kalevankatu 3, a quiet side street between the Central Station and Bulevardi, four hundred metres from the platforms and around the corner from Stockmann department store and the Forum Shopping Centre. The hostel is on one floor of a 1930s residential block — accessed via a courtyard entry (the 'yard' of the name) and an elevator to the hostel level.
Dorms range from 4-bed mixed to 10-bed budget, with private singles, twins, doubles, and family rooms across the inventory. All bathrooms are shared in the corridor (no en-suite options). Beds have privacy curtains, individual reading lights and lockers, and bed linens are included; towels are 3 EUR rental. Soundproofed walls and double-glazed windows are the reason a 10-bed dorm 400 metres from a major train station can still be quiet at night.
The hostel's social engine is the dining-and-lounge room: induction-hob shared kitchen with a 16-seat dining table, a separate TV lounge with sofas that broadcast live sports (mostly Finnish football and Liiga ice hockey), a board-games shelf, and a regular movie-night programme on Sunday evenings (BYOB allowed in the lounge but not dorms). The hostel runs free 11:00 walking tours daily, paid bike tours through Helsinki's Töölö Bay routes (15 EUR), and a weekly Wednesday evening 'introduce yourself' meet that's the closest thing Helsinki has to a hostel pub crawl.
Grocery deliveries to the lounge are a useful detail — the hostel partners with Wolt, so you can order a 12 EUR shared dinner from Picnic or Hesburger to the lobby and split it with whoever's in the kitchen. Pet-friendly door, no extra fee. Parking garage on site for 16 EUR a night, useful for road-trip arrivals.
