Tip Nº 01
Both hostel kitchens stock dishes and cookware but not seasonings or oil — bring or buy salt, oil, pepper at the local supermarket on day one (or use the leftover-shelf at either kitchen, which usually has communal donations from previous guests)
Tip Nº 02
Ehrenfeld's Turkish grocers (Etliyiz, Sahin Markt on Venloer Straße) sell fresh produce 30-40% cheaper than the German supermarket chains — fresh tomatoes, herbs, bread, feta, olives all in one stop
Tip Nº 03
Nippes' REWE on Neusser Straße is open 07:00-22:00 Mon-Sat, closed Sunday; if you arrive late or want Sunday cooking groceries plan ahead — the Späti shop next door covers Sunday but at a 30% premium
Tip Nº 04
Quiet hours apply to kitchens too — both hostels enforce 22:00 to 08:00 quiet, which means cooking late-night curry with the extractor fan running gets you a polite reminder
Tip Nº 05
If you want a kitchen-equipped hostel in a more central location, you won't find it — Cologne's Altstadt and Belgisches Viertel hostels skip kitchens. Weltempfänger and 404 are it for the kitchen-shared format in the city
