Jugendherberge München City
Modern DJH flagship near Nymphenburg Palace with a sun deck bar
DJH's Munich City flagship at Winthirplatz 8 in Neuhausen, two stops from Hauptbahnhof on the S-Bahn. Modern 2019 refurbishment with a rooftop terrace, lobby bar, proper buffet breakfast, 24-hour front desk, and family rooms. Walking distance to Nymphenburg Palace and Hirschgarten beer garden.
Jugendherberge München City is the DJH (Deutsches Jugendherbergswerk) network's Munich flagship and it sits on Winthirplatz, two stops from Hauptbahnhof on the S-Bahn, in the Neuhausen-Nymphenburg district. The area is residential and tidy — cobbled courtyards, an Italian café on the corner, the Rotkreuzplatz tram stop a four-minute walk. It's the closest you get to 'staying in Munich' without being in the tourist machine or the Hauptbahnhof budget zone.
The building was refurbished in 2019 and it shows. Modern common spaces, reading lounges with board games, a sun deck on the roof that doubles as a bar in summer. Breakfast is a proper buffet with sliced meats, three kinds of bread, a coffee machine that doesn't run out, and fresh fruit. DJH membership (€7) is required for non-members over 27, but you can join at check-in and it pays back immediately in the room rate.
It's quieter than party hostels downtown. The bar closes earlier than Wombat's and you won't find a pub crawl leaving from the lobby. That's either a feature or a bug depending on your trip. For families, mid-age travelers, or anyone who wants to sleep at 11pm, it's the best hostel in Munich. Hirschgarten beer garden is a 10-minute walk, Nymphenburg Palace gardens are 15, Marienplatz is 10 minutes on the U1.

“This was the best and coziest hostel I've ever stayed in. The staff were very friendly and always helpful with directions. The sun deck was my favourite spot each evening.”
“Very clean, good breakfast and connection to the public transportation. Rotkreuzplatz was four minutes away and the tram to Schwabing was easy. Would stay again next Munich trip.”
“The place was nice and match with the price very well. The buffet breakfast is generous. WiFi dropped once in my dorm but reception reset it in 5 minutes.”
