THE TENT is a unique Munich institution — a summer-only campground hostel in Moosach where you sleep in a 250-person shared tent or a smaller bedded dorm. Bonfire every night, on-site bar and restaurant, shared kitchen, walking tours, bike rental, and a relentlessly social crowd of under-30 backpackers. Open roughly May to October.
THE TENT is the Munich stop you only forget if you didn't come. In den Kirschen 30 is a summer campground in Moosach, 4.5km from the Altstadt, that has operated as a youth-only crash pad since the 1970s. The headline bed is a spot on a giant wooden platform inside a 250-person communal tent with blankets and a locker — €19, unbeatable in any German city. Beyond that, smaller six-person tents, actual beds in fabric dorms, and pitch-your-own sites round out the menu.
The whole place is built around the bonfire. Nightly, 9pm, no schedule, just whoever's around. Guitars show up. Picnic tables and garden furniture spread between the tents. The on-site bar runs until midnight and the kitchen opens for breakfast and dinner — homemade Bavarian dishes at €6-9, which is wild given the Munich context. Shared kitchen with two full hobs, walking tours that leave daily, bike rental at €8/day.
Under-30 only. Munich's one remaining place where the term 'backpacker' still means something. Tram 12 from Hackerbrücke S-Bahn stops directly outside, and gets you to Marienplatz in 25 minutes. Oktoberfest (Theresienwiese) is a 20-minute walk, which makes THE TENT the cheapest Wiesn bed in the city during the festival. Rooms and tents are cold in the shoulder season — May opening and October closing are genuinely chilly, pack a thermal layer.
