By 11h30 I had a working mental map of the city: which piazza is which baroque period, why the Duomo's facade is mismatched lava-and-marble, which streets are pedestrian and which take Vespas. I booked the hostel's Etna group day-trip for Wednesday (€45 with transport, guide, and Refugio Sapienza), the Taormina-Giardini train tickets for Thursday (€5 each way, hostel reception printed them for me), and the Saturday Ferrovia Circumetnea to Aci Trezza (€3.50, 20 minutes, lava coast and the Cyclops's rocks). Everything pre-arranged from the lobby. Three days of itinerary in 30 minutes of front-desk conversation.”
