Catania Hostels with Walking Tours and Day-Trip Bookings

Catania makes more sense when somebody walks you through it. The black volcanic-stone architecture, the lava-rebuild story (the city was destroyed by Etna in 1669 and again by the 1693 earthquake, then rebuilt twice), and the 5-tier baroque hierarchy of Piazza del Duomo only land if you have context. Three hostels make this practical with daily walking tours from the lobby, paid Etna and Taormina day-trips, bicycle rental for the Plaja beach run, and reception staff who book the Ferrovia Circumetnea train to Aci Trezza without the language barrier.

§ 01 — Traveler's take
I checked into Ostello degli Elefanti at 9h on a Tuesday and joined the 10h walking tour out of the lobby — €0, 90 minutes, ended at the Pescheria fish market. By 11h30 I had a working mental map of the city: which piazza is which baroque period, why the Duomo's facade is mismatched lava-and-marble, which streets are pedestrian and which take Vespas. I booked the hostel's Etna group day-trip for Wednesday (€45 with transport, guide, and Refugio Sapienza), the Taormina-Giardini train tickets for Thursday (€5 each way, hostel reception printed them for me), and the Saturday Ferrovia Circumetnea to Aci Trezza (€3.50, 20 minutes, lava coast and the Cyclops's rocks). Everything pre-arranged from the lobby. Three days of itinerary in 30 minutes of front-desk conversation.

Tips for Choosing a Hostel with City Tours in Catania

Tip Nº 01

The 10h Ostello degli Elefanti walking tour ends at La Pescheria fish market — perfect timing for granita-and-brioche at Pasticceria Savia (one block away). If the tour ends at 11h30, the breakfast spots are still serving granita until 12h.

Tip Nº 02

DIY Etna via AST bus: 8h15 from Piazza Stesicoro, €6.60 round trip, returns 16h30. Wear sturdy shoes — the Refugio Sapienza level (1900m) has loose lava gravel and the cable car up to 2500m is an extra €30 if conditions allow.

Tip Nº 03

Taormina by train: book the regional train (Trenitalia, €5) instead of the intercity (€9). Same destination, 5 minutes longer, half the price. The Yard's reception will print the regional ticket for you.

Tip Nº 04

Aci Trezza day-trip via Ferrovia Circumetnea: the train leaves Catania Borgo (3 stops north of Centrale on the metro) every 30 minutes; €3.50 round trip; 20 minutes to Aci Trezza. Beach village with the Cyclops's lava-rock islets just offshore. Half-day trip max.

Tip Nº 05

The Friday San Berillo bar crawl is actually a city tour disguised as a pub crawl — the staff guide takes you through the former red-light district with the urban-renewal context, ends at Vico Lavagna around 1h. €15 with two drinks and a guide. Run by Ostello degli Elefanti.
