Catania Shared KitchenRanked guide

Catania Hostels with a Shared Kitchen

Catania is the cheapest place in Sicily to do groceries — the daily Pescheria fish market behind Piazza del Duomo opens at 6h and the freshest swordfish lands by 8h, the Mercato di Piazza Carlo Alberto runs Monday-Saturday for produce and bread, and the city has held supermarket prices below Palermo's for a decade. Three hostels make self-catering practical: shared kitchens with gas stoves, two ovens, espresso mokas, and dining tables big enough to host the four people you met that morning at La Pescheria.

§ 01 — Traveler's take
I did three days at The Yard with a kitchen-led plan. Day 1: 7h Pescheria visit with another guest, brought home swordfish steak and lemons for €8. Cooked it on the gas stove with parsley and a salad from Carlo Alberto. Day 2: pasta alla Norma with aubergine I'd never have bought without the kitchen. Day 3: leftover tuna into puttanesca for four (everyone chipped in for capers and olives). Eating out for three nights would have cost €45-60. Cooking at the hostel, including market trips, came in around €18 total and I learned the city's food map.

Tips for Choosing a Hostel with Shared Kitchen in Catania

Tip Nº 01

La Pescheria peak: arrive 8h-9h. Locals start before 7h, restaurant buyers leave by 9h, by 10h the best fish is gone. Walk in with cash — most stalls don't take card.

Tip Nº 02

Mercato di Piazza Carlo Alberto: best for produce, bread, and dry goods. Sicilian tomatoes (€1.50/kg in season), Bronte pistachios (€20/kg), Pantelleria capers under salt (€5 for 250g). Sundays closed.

Tip Nº 03

Conad on Viale XX Settembre is the closest supermarket to The Yard (5 minutes' walk). Coop on Corso Sicilia is closer to Eco Hostel and Ostello degli Elefanti (8 minutes).

Tip Nº 04

Pasta alla Norma recipe for the kitchen: 400g pasta, 2 medium aubergines, 400g tinned tomatoes, ricotta salata, garlic, basil, salt. Fry aubergine cubes in olive oil until golden, drain on paper. Make tomato sauce with garlic. Toss pasta with sauce, top with aubergine, grate ricotta salata over. Total cost in a hostel kitchen: €4-5 for 4 people.

Tip Nº 05

Don't cook fish at Eco Hostel — the building is residential and the smell carries to the neighbours. Save fish for The Yard, which has better extraction. Stick to pasta and salads at Eco.
