Tree House Hostel Riga
Bright minimalist Old Town hostel on Kaļķu iela with a working elevator
Tree House sits on the fourth floor of a building on Kaļķu iela, Old Town's pedestrianized spine, a one-minute walk from the Freedom Monument and Riga Dome Cathedral. Bright minimalist dorms and privates, a working elevator (rare in fourth-floor Old Town hostels), shared kitchen with oven and toaster. 1917 Booking reviews.
Tree House is the quiet middle path between Blue Bird's boutique capsule design and Central Riga's budget family feel. It occupies the fourth floor of a converted apartment building on Kaļķu iela, Old Town's pedestrianized central street, and the working elevator is a genuine selling point here: half the Old Town hostels sit on third and fourth floors with no lift, and Tree House doesn't.
Interior design is bright Scandinavian-minimalist: white walls, pale wood, large windows facing Kaļķu iela or the inner courtyard. Dorms are 4, 6 and 8-bed with reading lights, sockets and under-bed lockers. Shared bathrooms run on a ratio of one per four-to-five beds. The shared kitchen has a proper oven (rare), a toaster, kettle, and full kitchenware, so baking and actual cooking both work.
No in-house bar, no organized pub crawl — Tree House leans on its location. You're one minute from the Freedom Monument, two minutes from Dome Cathedral, and two minutes from St Peter's Church tower. Folkklubs Ala, the cellar folk bar, is four minutes away, and the Central Market is a six-minute walk via the station route. The tour desk at reception books day trips to Jurmala beach (by train, €2.50) and to the KGB House museum, both worth doing. It is a hostel of small, reliable gestures rather than big social programming — which is exactly what its 1917 reviewers keep returning for.
