§ 01 — Summary

Brand-new design hostel in the middle of Grünerløkka, with kitchenettes and private bathrooms in every room, a leafy garden, terrace, and a cosy ground-floor bar that doubles as a movie-night spot.

§ 02 — The full story

Bunks at Rode is the rare new-build hostel that actually thought about what travelers want before pouring concrete. It sits on Københavngata, two minutes off Olaf Ryes plass — the sweet spot of Grünerløkka's hipster bar circuit, food halls, and Akerselva river walks. You're in the social heart of Oslo without paying Frogner prices.

What sets it apart: every room has its own kitchenette and private bathroom. In a city where eating out costs 200-300 NOK a meal, the ability to cook breakfast and pasta in your own room (or in the larger shared kitchen) is a real budget-saver. The walls are properly sound-proofed, so even on a Saturday night with the bar downstairs going, you actually sleep.

The garden out back is a quiet escape on summer evenings, and the bar pulls a relaxed local-meets-traveler crowd — not a party hostel, more of a slow-pint-and-chat scene. Movie nights are a regular fixture, which suits Oslo's long winters perfectly.

Grünerløkka itself is the reason to pick this hostel: Mathallen food hall is a 10-minute walk along the river, Tilt arcade bar and Crowbar are around the corner, and the tram from Olaf Ryes plass gets you to Oslo S in 8 minutes for the airport train.

§ 03 — Why we love it
  • 01Every room has its own kitchenette — a quiet game-changer in expensive Oslo where eating out can wreck your budget.
  • 02Sound-proofing is rare in hostels and even rarer in hostels with a downstairs bar. You actually sleep here.
  • 03Grünerløkka location: Tilt arcade bar, Mathallen food hall, and the Akerselva river walk are all within 10 minutes on foot.
  • 04Coop Mega supermarket is literally next door — buy beers before 20:00, eat well, save 100s of NOK a day.
  • 05Garden + terrace are the kind of outdoor space you only get in summer Oslo, and they're free to use until late.

Shared spaces were pretty cool and comfortable. The vibe in the bar downstairs was relaxed, perfect for solo travelers who want to chat without the chaos of a party hostel.

Bed was super comfortable, walls sound proof, no noise were coming from the corridor which was great. Staff were kind and helpful.

The facility was well-maintained, and is nearby a grocery store! Big plus for keeping the food budget down in Oslo.
