Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
Freedom Hostel is the Krakow hostel for people who want to stretch a budget across a longer stay. At 11-14 EUR a dorm bed you're paying about a third less than the Old Town party hostels, and the Krowodrza district is genuinely a more honest Krakow experience โ a farmer's market on Plac Nowy Kleparz rather than the tourist rotunda at Plac Nowy, bakeries full of Poles rather than stag parties, and the tram 4 stop 2 minutes away that lands you at Rynek Gลรณwny in 8 minutes. The Sunday pierogi dinner is a lovely icebreaker and the kind of thing that, at 25 PLN, feels like the hostel actually cares about you. Specifically pick this over Little Havana or Greg&Tom Party if you're doing a week in Krakow with day trips (Auschwitz, Wieliczka, Zakopane) โ the commute saved to attractions is worth more than 3 minutes to the Main Square. Tip: walk to Kleparz market on a Saturday morning for fresh obwarzanek straight from the bakery โ 1.50 PLN each, three for the price of one from the blue kiosks in Old Town.
๐ฏ Insider Tips
- 1Tram 4 runs every 6-8 minutes and stops at Teatr Bagatela (for Rynek Gลรณwny), Stradomska (for Wawel), and Starowiลlna (for Kazimierz) โ buy a 24h ticket at 17 PLN for unlimited rides.
- 2Plac Nowy Kleparz, 7 min walk, is a locals' farmer's market โ fresh pierogi, sheep cheese (oscypek), and soured bread for half what Kazimierz charges.
- 3Sunday communal dinner books up fast โ sign up at reception by Saturday noon if you want a seat.
- 4For early trains, walk to Krakรณw Gลรณwny in 12 min rather than trying to get a tram before 06:00 โ direct footpath via Dworcowa.

๐ The Full Story
Freedom Hostel occupies a converted apartment building on Pomorska in Krowodrza, a residential district northwest of the Old Town. The 15-minute walk to Rynek Gลรณwny is the trade-off for consistently lower dorm rates and a quieter neighborhood โ local bakeries, a proper farmer's market on Plac Nowy Kleparz (different from the Kazimierz one), and a tram stop on line 4 that reaches the main square in 8 minutes.
The hostel has around 60 beds across a mix of 4, 6, 8, and 10-bed mixed dorms, plus a few female-only dorms and private twins. The ground-floor common area is the social heart โ board games on shelves, a small bar (beer only, 10 PLN), and a communal kitchen with two stoves. Breakfast is a 20 PLN add-on; there's also a Biedronka supermarket 3 minutes away.
A low-key social programme runs: Friday walking tours of Kazimierz, Sunday communal pierogi dinners for 25 PLN, and occasional board-game tournaments. The demographic skews younger (early 20s first-timers) and longer (backpackers staying a week while they do Auschwitz, Wieliczka, and day trips to Zakopane). It is not a party hostel but it is social, and at 13 EUR dorm beds it's the correct budget pick.

โGood budget option. Location is not central but tram 4 gets you to the main square quickly. Sunday pierogi dinner was a nice touch and a good way to meet other travellers.โ

โStayed 8 nights while doing Auschwitz, Wieliczka and a trip to Zakopane. Freedom worked great as a base โ cheap, social enough, and the Krowodrza neighbourhood was actually a nice break from Old Town crowds.โ

โDobra opcja budลผetowa. Clean dorms, working showers, friendly international mix in the common room. The 15 min walk to Old Town is fine if you like walking.โ

โBooked the female dorm, slept great. Kitchen was clean and actually usable. Staff helped me book a Wieliczka ticket online directly for a better price than the tour desks in Old Town.โ
