HI Coimbra - Pousada de Juventude
The official Hostelling International branch — gender-segregated dorms, included breakfast, 24-hour reception, the most predictable budget bed in town.
HI Coimbra is the city's official Pousada de Juventude, on Rua Dr. Henriques Seco above the old town in the leafy Cumeada area. It's the cheapest predictable option in town — beds from 18 EUR including breakfast, separated men's and women's dorms, 24-hour staffed reception. Backpacker-card holders get an extra discount. Solo female travelers cite the gender-segregated dorm policy as a real reason to book here.
The building is a purpose-built youth hostel from the 1990s renovation of Portugal's Pousada de Juventude network — meaning it doesn't have the heritage charm of the old-town hostels but it has the institutional reliability that the chain trades on. Free WiFi, bar, lounge, 24-hour reception, daily housekeeping, full-day security, bicycle parking, tour desk. The rooms have parquet floors, balconies, and most have private bathrooms (rare for a hostel at this price).
Dorms are gender-segregated by default — men's and women's, no mixed dorms. This is unusual for a Portuguese hostel and is the single most-mentioned positive in solo-female reviews ('felt very safe' shows up repeatedly). Each dorm has 4 to 6 beds, work desk in the room, wardrobe, shower in the en-suite shared bathroom on each floor.
Breakfast is included and it's a real continental buffet — fresh fruit, cheese, ham, multiple breads, juice, and decent coffee. Served 08:00 to 10:00. The morning crowd is mostly older travelers and Camino-walkers passing through.
Location is the trade-off. You are 12 minutes' walk uphill east of the old town — close to Penedo da Saudade hostel, in the same residential hilltop area. Walking down to the cathedral takes 10 minutes, walking back up takes 15-18. Bus 6 from the centre runs frequently during the day; the night bus is sparse. Coimbra-B (intercity station) is a 12-minute taxi or 20-minute bus ride.

“Clean and comfortable. Good breakfast. Good staff.”
“The vibe was pretty chill, I liked the fact that they have men rooms and women rooms, not mixed (first time I see this in a hostel), felt very safe as a solo female traveler. The breakfast was absolutely amazing, not just cereals and yogurt.”
“Very friendly staff. Clean room and clean shower-area. Check-in was great with reception open 24 hours a day. Good breakfast.”
