Serenata Hotel & Hostel Coimbra
The cathedral-square hostel with the city's most-photographed terrace and a bar-crawl crew that runs four nights a week.
Serenata sits directly on Largo da Sé Velha, sharing a wall with the Old Cathedral. The building is a restored 18th-century townhouse with parquet floors and a rooftop sun terrace overlooking the cathedral spires and the river behind. It's the most social of Coimbra's hostels: the in-house bar, evening entertainment programme, and weekly bar crawls are the reasons solo travelers cluster here.
The location is the headline. You step out the door and you are on the cobbled square in front of the Sé Velha cathedral — a 12th-century Romanesque heap that doubles as the open-air venue for Fado de Coimbra performances most weekends. The Joanina Library and the University tower are 4 minutes uphill; the Praça do Comércio bar cluster is 5 minutes downhill. Coimbra-A train station is 7 minutes flat.
The hostel mixes an 8-room dorm setup (4-bed, 6-bed, 8-bed mixed and female-only) with a smaller hotel-side wing of private doubles and twins with private bath. Dorm beds have curtains, individual lights, lockers under the bed. The shared kitchen is the best-equipped of any Coimbra hostel — induction hobs, multiple ovens, dishwasher, the basics left out, herbs in pots on the windowsill.
The rooftop sun deck is the social anchor. Open from 09:00 to midnight, with deck chairs, a small bar that opens at 18:00, and a tiled view of the cathedral roof and the Mondego river bend. The on-site bar runs happy hour 18:00 to 19:30 (Sagres at 1.50 EUR, caipirinhas 4 EUR) and the staff-run bar crawl leaves 21:30 most Wednesday-Saturdays for around 12 EUR (3 stops, includes shots).
Known trade-offs: the Sé Velha steps mean luggage drag is real on arrival (no elevator, no taxi access — taxis stop on Rua da Couraça de Lisboa, you carry the rest). Friday/Saturday late-night noise from the cathedral square crowds can carry to street-facing rooms.

“It's beautiful and well located. The view is amazing, there's a patio, some chairs and tables where you can relax with a glass of wine after your day. The staff was friendly and very fun to chat with.”
“Very nice and clean hostel, very impressive shared kitchen. Short distance from the bus or train station, excellent location in the city center, walking distance from the old city, highly recommended.”
“Central location to most attractions. The old cathedral is just adjacent to this hostel; and it only takes a few minutes to walk up to the University, or walk down to the main commercial street. My 8-bed dormitory room was very big.”
