Penedo da Saudade sits on the leafy hilltop east of the old town, in a converted villa on Avenida Marnoco e Sousa. The property mixes hostel dorms with private suites, and breakfast is served on the upper terrace — guests consistently call out the morning view over the rooftops of Coimbra as the reason they'd come back.
The building is a 20th-century townhouse stretched across several floors, with parquet, balconies, and a small garden behind. Operated as a Suites & Hostel hybrid, you get a choice between a dorm bed (4 to 8 per room, in-room lockers, shared bath on the floor) and the private suites with their own bathrooms — the price gap is small enough that solo travelers often go private here.
The terrace is the sell. Breakfast (continental, included, fresh pastries and fruit, decent coffee) gets laid out by 8:00 and the morning view over the city — university tower, Sé Velha cathedral, and the river bend behind — is the best you'll get from any hostel in town. The garden behind the villa is shaded by orange trees and gets used for late afternoons.
Location is the trade-off: you are 10 to 12 minutes' walk downhill into the old town (faster), and 15 to 20 minutes uphill on the way back (much slower). Bus 5 and 6 from the centre serve the area but run sparsely after 22:00. The neighborhood itself, named after the poets' lookout point a 5-minute walk away, is residential and quiet — meaning sleep is excellent, but there are no late-night cafés around the corner.
Staff (Elisabet, Martin and a small team) are routinely the highest-rated thing in reviews — they hand out hand-drawn neighborhood maps at check-in and remember which restaurant they sent you to.
