Hostel Casa d'Alagoa
Faro's only proper social hostel — bar crawls, BBQ, themed dinners, sun deck
Faro's original party hostel, in a historical building facing Largo Alexandre Herculano with a balcony, BBQ, sun deck and a real social programme — bar crawls, themed dinners, movie nights, happy hour. The closest thing the city has to a Lagos-style social scene without leaving the old town.
Casa d'Alagoa is in a historical building on Praça Alexandre Herculano (also called Largo da Alagoa), with a balcony that overlooks the square's plane trees and a sun deck on the roof. It's been running for years (929 reviews and counting) and is the social-scene anchor of the Faro hostel scene — when reviewers say 'social atmosphere' for Faro, they generally mean Casa d'Alagoa.
The social programme is real, not decorative. There's a daily evening event of some kind: pub crawls 2-3 nights a week (working through Maktub, Bar 17, Columbus and the spots around Rua do Prior), themed dinners on Wednesdays and Sundays (€8-10 a head, BBQ in the courtyard or a Portuguese-themed meal indoors), movie nights when the weather doesn't cooperate, and happy hour at the in-house bar from 19h-21h with €3 spritz and €2 sagres. Bike tours and bike rental run from reception in the day.
The building itself is an old townhouse with high ceilings, simply-decorated rooms, balconies overlooking the square, and a fully-equipped shared kitchen. 24h reception means late check-ins from delayed flights are not a problem. The location is excellent: train and bus stations 8 minutes, Mercado Municipal 2 minutes, Capela dos Ossos 4 minutes, marina 8 minutes.
What the 8.4 average reflects: unanimously high marks for atmosphere, staff and social programme, with occasional notes that the dorms run hot in July-August (AC is in some rooms, fan in others) and that the soundproofing is what you'd expect from a 200-year-old townhouse with a bar downstairs. If you want a quiet sleep, Tilia or Casa da Madalena are better picks. If you want to actually meet people in Faro, this is the obvious choice.
