Casa da Madalena Backpackers Hostel
Rooftop, marina views, daily pancakes — Faro's most-loved hostel
The highest-rated hostel in Faro, run from a 19th-century townhouse on Travessa da Madalena, three minutes from the marina. Rooftop terrace with marina views, fresh pancakes every morning, and a 24-hour reception that explains how a 9.6 rating happens.
Casa da Madalena Backpackers occupies a 19th-century townhouse on Travessa da Madalena, a quiet cobbled lane 300 metres from the Faro marina. The hostel is famous in Faro for two things: the rooftop terrace with views over the marina and the orange-tile rooftops of Cidade Velha, and the freshly-made pancakes that come out of the kitchen every morning between 8h and 10h.
The building is small — capacity is around 30 beds across mixed dorms and a couple of private rooms — which is why the social atmosphere never feels stage-managed. Reception runs 24 hours, which matters because half the guests roll in late off TAP flights from Lisbon or the Renex bus from the capital. Staff organize walking tours of Cidade Velha most days at 11h00, and the rooftop fills up at sunset for a drink before guests head out for dinner in the old town.
What the 9.6 rating actually reflects: cleanliness is consistently called out (the dorms are turned over daily, the bathrooms are scrubbed twice a day), the staff are unusually invested for a small hostel — Filipe and the team know returning guests by name — and the location is unbeatable. From the front door, the cathedral is six minutes on foot, the train station is five minutes, and bus 14/16 to Praia de Faro stops three minutes away on Rua da Senhora do Carmo.
This is not a party hostel. It is the social-but-grown-up choice in Faro: rooftop drinks until 23h, lights out by midnight, breakfast pancakes the next day. Couples book it as much as solo backpackers, and the mix is part of why it works.
- 019.6 rating is the highest in Faro — the cleanliness and staff are not exaggerations.
- 02The rooftop is a real evening platform, not a token square of decking — sunset drinks here, dinner in the old town after.
- 03Pancakes at 8h-10h is a ritual, not a brochure promise.
- 04300 metres from the marina + 5 min walk to the train station = best base for Algarve day trips by rail.
- 05Walking tours of Cidade Velha at 11h00 most days, run by staff, free for guests.
- Rooftop terrace with Faro marina view
- Fresh pancakes every morning
- 3 min walk to the marina, 6 min to the cathedral
- Daily walking tours of Cidade Velha
