Wax Hostel
The only hostel actually on Praia de Faro — sandbar beach across the road
The only quality hostel actually on Praia de Faro — Avenida Nascente, 11, with windows over the Ria Formosa lagoon and the Atlantic across the road. Sun terrace, garden BBQ, walking and canoeing tours from reception, 6 minutes by taxi from the airport.
Wax Hostel sits on Avenida Nascente at Praia de Faro, the long sandbar beach 7 km south of the old town. The location is the entire pitch: from the front door it's roughly 30 metres across the road to the Atlantic, and the back-side windows look over the Ria Formosa lagoon and the boat moorings of the small marina. There are no other quality hostels on the beach itself — booking.com lists about 60 properties on Praia de Faro and Wax is the only one rated above 8 in the hostel category.
The building has a sun terrace, a small garden with BBQ facilities, a fully-equipped shared kitchen, and a lounge with a TV. Walking tours and canoeing trips around the lagoon channels run from reception (the canoe option is the highlight — paddle into the lagoon at low tide, see the salt pans and the seabirds). Hiking and bike tours work from the same desk.
The trade-off is the location's flip side. Praia de Faro is a single-road sandbar with about 25 restaurants and bars, a couple of small markets, and a Ferry boat to the city centre. After 22h the road is dark and isolated; the last bus 14/16 to the city centre runs at around 22h-23h depending on season. Wax Hostel is therefore a different Faro stay than the old-town options: you wake up to the sea, you swim before breakfast, you eat at one of the beach restaurants, you take the bus into town for the cathedral and Capela dos Ossos as a day trip rather than as the home base.
The airport is 6 minutes by taxi (€10) or 10 minutes by bus 14, which makes Wax Hostel the most logical first or last night of an Algarve trip — sea swim before the 8h flight, no city traffic, cheaper than a city-centre hotel.
- 01The only quality hostel directly on Praia de Faro — sea swim before breakfast is a real plan, not an aspiration.
- 02Lagoon view from the back-side windows means you fall asleep to Ria Formosa boats, not city traffic.
- 03Canoeing trips into the lagoon channels (€20-25, around 2 hours) are the best way to see the salt pans and seabird colonies.
- 046-minute taxi to FAO airport makes this the obvious first or last night of an Algarve trip.
- 05Karine's hosting comes up unprompted in 70% of the reviews — small details (towel rental, blinds for sleeping, the bus timetable) that make a beach stay actually work.
- Across the road from Praia de Faro beach
- Lagoon-view rooms (Ria Formosa)
- Canoeing trips from reception
- 6 min by taxi from the airport
“Karine was so welcoming and helpful. The hostel was clean, quiet and well cared for. Absolutely everything we needed. Location was beautiful, with windows overlooking the lagoon and ocean across the street.”
“My all-time favourite place to stay at in Faro. Keep your key on you at all times — there was a guest who kept locking herself out and others too if we happened to be in the kitchen or on the terrace without our room keys.”
“The hostel is just a few metres (literally) from the beach. The location is close to a minimarket, restaurants, the ferry boat to the city, and a bus stop. The airport is 6 minutes by taxi or 10 minutes by bus.”
