Tip Nº 01
The Mihai Viteazu market is the secret weapon — 4 minutes from Choco Home, 8 from Retro Hostel. Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning before 10 am for the freshest produce; weekends sell out by noon. Bring small lei notes (under 50) since vendors rarely have change for 100s.
Tip Nº 02
Profi 24h on Strada Republicii (5 min from Retro, 8 from Choco) is the late-night fallback for pasta, rice, olive oil and wine — but the prices are 30-50% higher than Mihai Viteazu market. Use it for filling-in, not the weekly shop.
Tip Nº 03
Choco Home is the only hostel where you can do laundry and cook simultaneously — the washing machine and dryer combo plus the dishwasher means an evening of self-care between two days of hiking is genuinely productive. Use this if you're 3+ nights into a Transylvania loop.
Tip Nº 04
If you cook breakfast (eggs, bread, telemea cheese, tomatoes from the market), you'll spend about €1.50 per person versus €3-4 at the Old Town café. On a 4-night Cluj stay that's a €10 difference per traveller — enough to fund the Salina Turda day trip.
