Our Honest Take

From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice

Ok Hostel is La Latina's safe bet โ€” the front desk is genuinely the best in any Madrid hostel (Rose, Estaphan, Israel show up by name in reviews going back years), the building is unusually clean for its size, and the location is quiet enough to sleep but close enough to walk everywhere. It is not the wildest party hostel in town (that's Generator), it is not the cheapest (that's Way Hostel), but it is the one with the fewest weak points. Pick it if you're staying more than three nights, want consistency, and plan to hit El Rastro on Sunday โ€” Ribera de Curtidores is a 5-minute walk from the front door.

๐ŸŽฏ Insider Tips

  • 1Ask for a dorm on the interior courtyard side, not the Calle Juanelo side โ€” Juanelo is quiet but the courtyard rooms are the quietest.
  • 2Sunday morning: walk to El Rastro by 9:30am, skip Plaza de Cascorro (crowded and overpriced), hit Calle Amparo for the vintage clothes stalls. Back to the hostel by 12 for their brunch.
  • 3The on-site bar's menu del dรญa (โ‚ฌ12, Mon-Fri) undercuts most Sol restaurants and is decent quality โ€” good rainy-day lunch option.
  • 4Bar crawl route hits Sala Sol (the old movida venue) around midnight โ€” skip the โ‚ฌ15 ticket at the door and just stay on the crawl, it's included.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Why We Love It

1

Award-winning front desk โ€” Rose, Estaphan, Israel turn strangers into repeat guests

2

200 m from La Latina metro, 8 min walk to Plaza Mayor, 5 min walk to El Rastro on Sundays

3

Bar crawl is the right quality for the price โ€” 5 bars, not 3, with locals in at least 2 of them

4

Shared kitchen is actually usable (induction, working fridge, not just a token)

5

Cleanliness at 9+ despite 150+ beds is genuinely rare in this class

๐Ÿ“– The Full Story

Ok Hostel occupies a quiet side street in La Latina, two minutes off the metro and close enough to Plaza Mayor that you walk to dinner but far enough from Sol that you actually sleep. The building runs a proper restaurant on the ground floor, a bar that stays open late, and a shared kitchen for the cook-your-own-pasta-at-midnight crowd. Dorms are clean, beds have individual reading lights and outlets, and the air conditioning actually works in summer.

The social programming is where it wins. Daily bar crawls leave from reception at 22:00 and work their way through Malasaรฑa and Sol. A walking tour leaves mid-morning covering the Austrias neighborhood. Evening entertainment (screened matches, live music some nights) runs in the ground-floor bar. None of it is compulsory, but it is how most solo travelers end their first night with a group.

The front desk is the signature. Rose, Estaphan, and Israel โ€” named in review after review โ€” know Madrid the way concierges at 5-star hotels wish they did. Printed metro maps, bus-from-Barajas instructions, and honest recommendations on which tapas bars are actually locals-only. The hostel picked up Hostelworld's top-rated award multiple years running and you can feel why.
