Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
Way Hostel is the classic backpacker hostel Madrid still has in its centre โ โฌ22 gets you a clean 6-bed dorm bed on a quiet medieval street six minutes from Sol, and the staff run the kind of old-school social programme (free walking tour, tapas crawl, paella night) that used to define hostels before the design-boutique era. No en-suites, no rooftop, no DJ. If you came to Madrid to stay in a bedroom or drink in a nightclub, pick somewhere else. If you came for the city and want the cheapest clean central bed plus a built-in group of travellers by night two, this is the pick. Bring your own towel.
๐ฏ Insider Tips
- 1Staff tapas crawl departs Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday at 21:00 โ sign up at reception by 19:00, free but limited to 12 people.
- 2The Friday paella workshop (โฌ10) happens in the shared kitchen at 20:30 โ bring a bottle of wine from Carrefour Express next door, no corkage.
- 3Cava Baja's best no-frills tapas bar is Cueva del Chavo (on the staff-crawl route) โ order the huevos rotos con jamรณn and a caรฑa, โฌ6 total.
- 4Bring a towel. Renting one is โฌ2/stay and the hostel towels are small. Buy a โฌ5 travel microfibre at the Carrefour Express on Calle Atocha if you forgot.
๐ฅ Why We Love It
โฌ22 for a 6-bed central-Madrid dorm bed is the strongest price in Centro without compromising cleanliness
Free morning coffee + free daily walking tour is the old-school backpacker formula done right
Friday themed dinners (โฌ10 paella) are the easiest icebreaker in any Madrid hostel
Calle Relatores is quiet at night โ Huertas action is 3 streets away, not outside your window
Staff-led tapas crawl goes to Cava Baja's Cueva del Chavo and Lamiak, not tourist traps
๐ The Full Story
Way Hostel sits on Calle Relatores, a narrow medieval street in Huertas, four minutes' walk from Tirso de Molina metro and six from Puerta del Sol. The vibe is deliberately old-school backpacker โ not a design-heavy boutique, not a big-box party house, just a proper sharing-room-with-strangers hostel where you cook pasta in the shared kitchen, play cards in the lounge, and join the tapas crawl because the staff member leading it knows every bar on Cava Baja.
The building has two bunk-layout styles: mixed dorms of 4, 6, and 8, and a small number of private doubles. Bathrooms are shared per floor โ clean, with water pressure, but no en-suites. Linens are included; towels are an extra โฌ2 or bring your own. Air conditioning in all dorms. Reading lights and plugs at every bed. Lockers in every dorm.
Social programming is the strength. Free walking tour of the Austrias daily at 10:30. Tapas crawl Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday. Happy hour at the lounge bar 19:00-20:30. Themed dinner on Fridays (โฌ10 โ paella or tortilla workshop). A 'tour or class about local culture' โ flamenco intro, Spanish slang lesson โ usually Wednesdays. It's the kind of curated social calendar that normally only shows up at twice the nightly rate.

โReally affordable for the location, the morning coffee and the common room actually made it feel like a hostel in the classic sense.โ

โPaella night on Friday was genuinely fun, met four people I ended up travelling with to Seville. Staff ran it themselves which felt authentic.โ

โGood central location and a proper shared kitchen. Bathroom is shared but always clean when I used it. Towels are an extra fee which caught me off guard.โ

โThe free walking tour the hostel runs is better than the chain ones on Gran Vรญa and you tip what you want at the end.โ
