§ 01 — Summary

Koba Hostel is the design-pod choice in Gros — modern interiors, contemporary art on the walls, polished wood and concrete bunks, and a downstairs bar that locals and travellers actually mix in. 8.7 across 2,052 reviews. Two-block walk to the Kursaal bridge for Old Town pintxos, four blocks to Zurriola surf beach, ten minutes' walk to Donostia-Amara Renfe.

§ 02 — The full story

Koba sits at Calle Karkizano 5, the heart of Gros, two blocks back from the river and within easy reach of both sides of the city. From the door it is six minutes' walk to Parte Vieja over the Kursaal bridge, four minutes to Zurriola surf beach, and the immediate neighbourhood is the alternative-pintxos zone that Donostia regulars favour over Old Town's tourist windows: Bar Bergara on the corner, Paco Bueno around the block, La Cepa three minutes away.

The building is a design-led conversion — concrete-and-wood pod bunks with curtains, USB ports, in-bed reading lights, internal storage shelves and lockers under the bed. Dorms are 4 to 8 beds with shared bathrooms on the floor, and there are a handful of private doubles with en-suite for couples. Reviewers consistently call out the cleanliness (cleaned twice a day) and the polish: this is one of the few hostels where the photos on the website look like the place.

Downstairs there is a contemporary bar and lounge — local craft beer (Basqueland Brewing Project on tap), txakoli, simple pintxos, and a coffee counter for breakfast (€7 with proper coffee, croissant and Iberian ham). The kitchen is shared and modern. A pintxos crawl meets at the bar Wed/Sat 21:00 (€20 — 4 pintxos, 4 drinks, runs Bar Bergara, La Cepa, Paco Bueno, Atari Gastroteka over the bridge), and there is a 'breakfast trail' walk on Sundays at 09:00 to local Gros bakeries for pantxineta and coffee.

Who this is for: travellers who want the polish of a Centro pod hostel but the neighbourhood character of Gros, surfers who want closer-than-Centro Zurriola access (4 min vs 18 min), couples doing the private-double-with-en-suite route, and anyone who wants a hostel bar that locals actually drink at. Skip if you must walk back from Old Town in under five minutes — Koba is six minutes from Parte Vieja over the Kursaal bridge.

§ 03 — Why we love it
  • 01The design polish is the headline — concrete-and-wood pods, contemporary art on the walls, the kind of hostel where the photos match the reality and reviewers consistently mention 'feels more like a boutique'
  • 02Two blocks back from the Kursaal bridge is the sweet-spot Gros location — six minutes to Parte Vieja for pintxos, four minutes to Zurriola for surf, ten minutes to the Renfe station
  • 03Downstairs bar with Basqueland craft beer and txakoli on tap is the only Donostia hostel bar that locals actually drink at, not just travellers
  • 04Wednesday and Saturday pintxos crawl runs the local Gros bars (Bergara, La Cepa, Paco Bueno) plus one over the bridge — a real €20 deal with 4 pintxos and 4 drinks
  • 05Private doubles with en-suite at €85 are the cheapest couple's-private-room in Gros and reviewers consistently call them better than expected for the money

Portugal10.0

Location, comfort, cleanliness and attentive staff. I really enjoyed my stay. Breakfast at the counter was a proper coffee and a fresh croissant — far better than expected for €7.

Good location, stayed in a double room with private bathroom, good value for money. Six minutes' walk to Old Town over the bridge, four minutes the other way to Zurriola — best of both sides of Donostia.

The check-in staff was very friendly. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Each bunk has proper privacy with the curtain. Did the Wednesday pintxos crawl — went to Bar Bergara, La Cepa and Paco Bueno, all local, all real.
