Surfing Etxea - Surf Hostel
The dedicated surf hostel of Donostia, three blocks from Zurriola, with surf-school packages, a bar downstairs that locals drink at, and a four-bed dorm that solo travellers consistently rank as the best in the city.
Surfing Etxea is the small, surf-themed hostel of Gros — three blocks from Zurriola surf beach, ten minutes' walk over the Kursaal bridge to Parte Vieja, and pairing every booking with surf-school discounts at Pukas next door. 8.6 rating across 481 reviews, half the size of A Room In The City, twice the personality.
Surfing Etxea sits on Calle Zabaleta in Gros, the surfer-creative neighbourhood across the Urumea river from Old Town. From the door it is three minutes to Zurriola beach for the dawn surf check, eight minutes over the Kursaal bridge to Parte Vieja for pintxos, and twelve minutes to Donostia-Amara station. The neighbourhood is the city's alternative-pintxos route — Bar Bergara for the txikito-grilled mushroom, Paco Bueno for gambas en gabardina, La Cepa for tortilla de bacalao.
The building is a converted Gros townhouse with around 60 beds — mostly 4 to 8-bed dorms with curtains, USB ports and proper lockers, plus a few twin and double privates. The four-bed mixed dorm is what reviewers consistently flag as the best dorm in the city: spacious, quiet, with a private bathroom in the room. Linens included, towels for €3.
Downstairs is the surf-themed bar and lounge — local craft beer, simple bocadillos, board-rental and surf-lesson sign-up at the bar (Pukas Surf School and Hawaii Surf School both partner with the hostel for €30 group lessons). The lounge has a board-shaping bench, surf magazines and a small movie corner. A pintxos crawl meets here Tuesday-Saturday at 21:00 (€18 includes 4 pintxos + 4 drinks) and runs through Gros's local bars rather than the tourist Old Town windows.
Who this is for: surfers, solo travellers wanting Gros's calmer mornings + livelier evenings than tourist-Centro, and anyone who wants to meet locals over txakoli rather than English-speakers in a chain hostel lobby. Skip if you must be inside Old Town walking distance — Gros adds eight minutes over the bridge but in return you get the real city's neighbourhood, not the tourist core.
