VTZ The Botanic Hostel
Shared kitchen, walking tours, the closest thing Zaragoza has to a backpacker hostel
A 78-bed budget hostel on the eastern edge of the old town, with a shared kitchen, board games, and walking-tour partnerships. The most 'hostel-like' option on this list, dorms with bunks, communal lounge, and a quietly social vibe.
VTZ The Botanic Hostel is the only entry on this list that operates like an actual backpacker hostel. It sits on Calle Basilio Boggiero in the Magdalena edge of the old town, six minutes' walk from Plaza del Pilar and two minutes from the indie bars on Calle de las Armas. Family rooms and twins outnumber dorms, but the shared kitchen, lounge, and board-game corner are the hostel-y heart of the place.
The building is modern, family-rooms are well-finished with private bathrooms, AC, and tile floors. The shared kitchen is properly equipped, gas hob, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, dining table, you can actually cook a meal here, not just heat soup. The shared lounge has board games and puzzles, which sounds twee until you're stuck in Zaragoza on a 38C August afternoon and someone pulls out a Catan board.
Walking tours are organized via the front desk. Free maps, English-speaking guides, twice-daily departures in summer. The hostel partners with a couple of independent operators that do El Tubo tapas crawls and Aljafería history walks for €15-20 per person. Wifi is reliable, the lockers are big enough for a 70L pack, and 24h security keeps the door safe at 03:00 returns from El Tubo.
The 7.2 rating reflects rooms that are functional rather than fancy, the building was renovated competently but not lavishly. What matters is the social infrastructure (kitchen, lounge, walking tours) and the location, both of which work. This is the booking for solo travelers, couples on a backpack route, or anyone who wants Zaragoza to feel like the rest of their hostel-hopping trip.
- 01The fully-equipped shared kitchen is the only one in any Zaragoza hostel, decisive for week-long budget stays.
- 02Walking tours via the front desk make it easy to actually see the Aljafería and the Roman wall.
- 03Magdalena old town puts you in walking distance of every old-town highlight, plus the more local Calle de las Armas bars.
- 04Board games + shared lounge create the only consistent meet-other-travelers space in central Zaragoza.
- 05Twin and family rooms with private bathrooms work for couples who don't want a bunk.

“Its clean and the location is great for walking everywhere in the old town. Front desk staff helped me arrange a walking tour and recommended a really good tapas bar in El Tubo. Shared kitchen was a plus.”
“Clean rooms, decent shared kitchen, board games in the lounge area. The location in Magdalena is calmer than directly next to Plaza del Pilar but only six minutes' walk away. Good budget option for a few days.”
“Functional rooms, AC working well in summer, dorm beds had reading lights and lockers big enough for a 70L pack. The walking tour booked through reception was decent value at €18.”
