Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
Castanea Old Town is the hostel you pick when Stockholm visit #1 is under 48 hours and you want to walk out the door into Gamla Stan without dealing with the metro. It's a small, genuinely friendly place — 24-hour reception staff remember returning guests by name — and the kitchen is the social hub because there's no bar. The catch is the metal bunk beds (reviewers mention the squeaking almost universally) and that Gamla Stan tourist pricing applies at every nearby cafe. For a 3-plus night stay with more of a working-hostel kitchen routine, STF Långholmen or Zinkensdamm over in Södermalm are better picks. For one-night-to-48-hour 'I want the Stockholm postcard experience starting from my doorstep', Castanea earns its 8.9.
🎯 Insider Tips
- 1Ask for a top bunk in the 4-bed dorms over the 8-bed — reviewers flag the larger rooms as noisier with the hallway traffic. The 4-beds have the same bathroom setup but materially better sleep.
- 2Eat breakfast at Chokladkoppen on Stortorget (two blocks away, open 09:00) instead of the hostel — it's the classic Gamla Stan cafe and reasonable by old-town standards. Skip the overpriced tourist restaurants on Västerlånggatan.
- 3The 24-hour reception means late arrivals are fine, but there's a shoes-off policy at the entrance — bring socks or slippers, the floors are genuinely cold in winter.
- 4Walk to Monteliusvägen at sunset: 15 minutes south across Slussen bridge, the best free Stockholm viewpoint looking back at your hostel's rooftop skyline. Best at 20:00 in summer, 15:30 in winter.
🔥 Why We Love It
Single best address in Stockholm old town — walk everywhere
Only 50 beds — friendly, not a tourist-factory
24-hour reception staff who remember returning guests
Full kitchen is the social hub in a bar-less hostel
Spotless cleanliness rare for a 400-year-old building
📖 The Full Story
Castanea Old Town Hostel occupies a 17th-century building one block off Stortorget, the cobblestone square at the heart of Gamla Stan. The old town is a 17-block island: you can walk it end to end in 12 minutes, and Castanea puts you at the centre of it. The Royal Palace is 300 metres one way, the ferry pier for Djurgården is 400 metres the other, and T-Centralen metro is 8 minutes on foot across Gamla Stan's north bridge.
Rooms are 4-bed, 6-bed and 8-bed dorms plus a few private doubles. Beds are metal bunks (reviewers flag that they squeak), bed linens are included in the rate, and each bed has a small reading light and a locker. The shared bathrooms are on the hallway, not en-suite. The kitchen is the real selling point: full-sized fridge, two-hob stoves, big central table where solo travelers cook and eat together.
There's no bar on-site — Gamla Stan is the bar. Sten Sture, Wirströms, Tudor Arms and half a dozen old-pub formats are within 100 metres. The downside of an old-town hostel anywhere in Europe is the same: tourist prices at every cafe and restaurant on your block. Walk five minutes to Slussen or over to Södermalm for half the cost.
Reviewers consistently call out three things: the spotless cleanliness (extraordinary for a 50-bed budget hostel in a 400-year-old building), the 24-hour reception staff who name-remember their guests, and the location — the single most important factor in picking a Stockholm hostel if your visit is under 48 hours. If your priority is sleep quality over location, a quieter Södermalm hostel will serve you better.
