Our Honest Take

From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice

City Backpackers is the social-backpacker-hostel pick in central Stockholm, and its two signature perks — the free evening sauna and the free pasta — genuinely set it apart from Generator Stockholm (bigger, less personality) and STF Skeppsholmen (quieter, more tourists). The sauna runs 19:00 to 23:00 every night, free to guests, first-come-first-served, and it's the social hub of the hostel — you meet more people here than in the bar. The bar crawl runs three nights a week and the destination is always Söder (Kvarnen, Akkurat, SoFo). The location is central (500 m to Central Station) but the block itself is on Norrmalm, which goes quiet after 22:00 — expect to commute to the bars. Pick this over Generator for the genuine backpacker feel; pick Castanea if you want Gamla Stan atmosphere over party energy.

🎯 Insider Tips

  • 1Show up for the 19:30 sauna slot specifically — earlier and it's half-full, later (21:00-plus) it's packed with the pre-bar crowd. 19:30 is the sweet spot for actually talking to people.
  • 2The kitchen's free pasta is always stocked, and there's a box of free herbs, olive oil, salt. Combined with a Hemköp run for vegetables, 3 EUR makes a proper dinner.
  • 3Borrow the ice skates in winter (free from reception, November to March depending on the freeze) — Kungsträdgården rink is 10 minutes away and genuinely magical at night under the Christmas lights.
  • 4The organised bar crawl runs Monday/Wednesday/Friday, meets in the hostel bar at 20:30, and usually ends at Kvarnen or Akkurat in Söder. Cheaper than the commercial Stockholm bar crawls and with a smaller, friendlier group.

📖 The Full Story

City Backpackers Hostel sits on Upplandsgatan in Norrmalm, 500 metres from Stockholm Central Station and a 5-minute walk from Drottninggatan's main shopping strip. It's in a 19th-century apartment building and has been an independent backpacker hostel since 1997 — by Stockholm standards, that's old-school and it shows in the culture. The bar crawl is organised three times a week, breakfast is paid-add but kitchen pasta is free, and the evening sauna (free to guests, no booking slot, first come first served) is the signature feature.

Rooms are 4, 6, 8, and 12-bed dorms plus a handful of privates. Beds are wooden bunks (quieter than the metal ones at Castanea), bed linens are included, and every dorm has air conditioning (unusual in Stockholm at this price — most hostels rely on open windows). The shared bathrooms are spotless, allocated per wing, and the kitchen is genuinely large — two stoves, multiple prep stations, and a dining area that seats 30 comfortably.

The evening sauna is the social thing. Every night, 19:00 to 23:00, a proper Swedish wood-benched sauna runs free for guests — 20-minute slots that regulate themselves as people cycle in and out. It's the thing reviewers talk about more than anything else. Free ice skates in winter (borrowed from reception, for Kungsträdgården ice rink 10 minutes away) is another nice touch.

Location trade-offs are central Stockholm standard: you're walkable to everything but you're in Norrmalm, the slightly soulless business district. Drottninggatan is pickpocket territory and the street is dead after 22:00. Your bar scene is a 15-minute walk south across Slussen bridge into Södermalm. For 1- to 3-night stays with a social-bar-crawl-plus-sauna rhythm, City Backpackers is the Stockholm pick.
