City Backpackers Hostel
Free sauna every evening, free pasta, free ice skates in winter — the most genuine backpacker hostel in central Stockholm
8.5-rated backpacker hostel set in a 19th-century building on Upplandsgatan — 500 metres from Stockholm Central Station and 5 minutes from Drottninggatan. Evening sauna free for guests, free pasta permanently in the kitchen, free ice skates in winter. The social backpacker hostel in central Stockholm.
City Backpackers Hostel sits on Upplandsgatan in Norrmalm, 500 metres from Stockholm Central Station and a 5-minute walk from Drottninggatan's main shopping strip. It's in a 19th-century apartment building and has been an independent backpacker hostel since 1997 — by Stockholm standards, that's old-school and it shows in the culture. The bar crawl is organised three times a week, breakfast is paid-add but kitchen pasta is free, and the evening sauna (free to guests, no booking slot, first come first served) is the signature feature.
Rooms are 4, 6, 8, and 12-bed dorms plus a handful of privates. Beds are wooden bunks (quieter than the metal ones at Castanea), bed linens are included, and every dorm has air conditioning (unusual in Stockholm at this price — most hostels rely on open windows). The shared bathrooms are spotless, allocated per wing, and the kitchen is genuinely large — two stoves, multiple prep stations, and a dining area that seats 30 comfortably.
The evening sauna is the social thing. Every night, 19:00 to 23:00, a proper Swedish wood-benched sauna runs free for guests — 20-minute slots that regulate themselves as people cycle in and out. It's the thing reviewers talk about more than anything else. Free ice skates in winter (borrowed from reception, for Kungsträdgården ice rink 10 minutes away) is another nice touch.
Location trade-offs are central Stockholm standard: you're walkable to everything but you're in Norrmalm, the slightly soulless business district. Drottninggatan is pickpocket territory and the street is dead after 22:00. Your bar scene is a 15-minute walk south across Slussen bridge into Södermalm. For 1- to 3-night stays with a social-bar-crawl-plus-sauna rhythm, City Backpackers is the Stockholm pick.
