Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
CODE - The Loft is the quieter, more kitchen-friendly sister to The Court. Same pod engineering, same included breakfast, but with a proper shared kitchen and a top-floor loft lounge the Old Town property doesn't have. It's the pick if you want pod privacy plus the ability to cook โ a combination that doesn't exist anywhere else in the CODE portfolio or in New Town Edinburgh. Skip it if you want Old Town atmosphere (The Court wins) or in-house bar life (Kick Ass wins). The Loft is the practical, quieter choice for two-to-four-night stays where you want to self-cater and still sleep in a pod.
๐ฏ Insider Tips
- 1The top-floor loft lounge is genuinely the best hostel lounge in New Town โ exposed beams, skylight, laptop-friendly sockets. Come up here at 9 am with a coffee before the breakfast crowd finishes.
- 2Ask for a pod on floor 2 or 3 away from the Rose Street lane โ the lane-facing pods catch pub noise until 1 am on weekends.
- 3The shared kitchen has a guest-pantry shelf โ previous travellers leave pasta, oil and tea. Check it before a Tesco run.
- 4If you want the CODE pub crawl, it meets at The Court's basement bar at 9 pm. It's a 10-minute walk from The Loft, down North Bridge and along Lawnmarket.

Rose Street pub lane 90 seconds away if you want easy bar life
๐ The Full Story
CODE - The Loft is the original of the two CODE pod hostels in Edinburgh โ opened 2017, on Rose Street North Lane, the cut-through between Rose Street (New Town pub strip) and George Street (New Town cocktail strip). It's four minutes' walk from Princes Street and eight minutes from Waverley, which puts it on the New Town side of town โ quieter at night than the Old Town pod hostels (including its sister CODE - The Court) but still a 10-minute walk from the Royal Mile and 7 minutes from the Grassmarket.
The Loft holds around 150 pods across four floors, including a vaulted loft on the top floor with exposed beams โ the signature of the property. Pod build is the same as The Court: privacy curtain, reading light, USB and UK plug, under-pod locker, soundproofed walls. Mixed dorm pod rooms run from 6 to 16 beds; there are female-only pod rooms and two twin-pod privates for couples.
The difference from The Court: The Loft has a proper shared kitchen on the ground floor (four hobs, one oven, fridge, freezer, dishes) and a more substantial guest lounge on the top-floor loft. This is the CODE pick if you want to cook your own dinner rather than eat out every night. Breakfast is included (cereal, toast, porridge, filter coffee, served 7 to 10).
No on-site bar โ The Loft is the quieter CODE. Rose Street pub lane is 90 seconds out the door if you want bar life, and The Court's basement bar is a 10-minute walk if you want the CODE crawl.
Reviewers flag the stairs (no lift, four floors), the shower pressure on the top loft floor (occasional low pressure at peak times), and occasional weekend noise from the Rose Street pub crowd at 1 am. Ask for a pod on floor 2 or 3 away from the lane-facing side for the quietest sleep.
