The Bearded Dad Hostel
Skanderbeg-side villa with a rooftop sunset bar over Mount Dajti
An owner-run villa hostel five minutes from Skanderbeg Square, with a rooftop terrace bar that catches sunset over Mount Dajti and a garden the staff actually maintains. Best central location of any Tirana hostel under 20 EUR a bed.
The Bearded Dad sits in a 1960s villa on Rruga Hamid Shijaku, three blocks east of Skanderbeg Square — the closest a hostel gets to the geographic centre of Tirana without losing the residential calm. The owner Erion (the bearded one) runs the place hands-on: he checks you in, joins the rooftop in the evening, and books you onto the 11am walking tour himself.
The rooftop terrace is the daily highlight. Two flights up, sun loungers, an honest bar (3 EUR raki, 4 EUR Korça beer), and a clean line of sight to Mount Dajti at sunset. The kitchen below is shared and clean; breakfast is included and homemade — pite, eggs, fresh figs in season, Albanian honey on the table.
Dorms are 4 to 8 beds with curtains and reading lights, AC in every room, and the soundproofing actually holds. Bathrooms are en-suite for the smaller dorms, shared for the 8-bed. Private rooms upstairs share the rooftop bar without sharing dorm noise.
The vibe is sociable but not chaotic — guests gather on the terrace from 7pm and the bar runs until midnight, but quiet hours are enforced and dorm sleep is the actual default. The walking tour group leaves from the front gate at 11am and Erion leads the Wednesday bar crawl personally if numbers are right.
