Kolpinghaus Linz
The Catholic-association guesthouse with the best Linz breakfast — quiet, central, exceptional value at €60
Kolpinghaus Linz is a guesthouse run by the Kolping Society on Gesellenhausstraße, twelve minutes walk from both Hauptplatz and the Hauptbahnhof. Rooms are simple singles and doubles with private shower and toilet, breakfast is the standout (every fifth review uses some variant of "better than 5-star hotels"), there is a small bar and a 24-hour front desk, and couples specifically rate the location 9.5. Around €60 with breakfast included — the most consistent value in central Linz.
Kolpinghaus Linz is a Kolping-Society house — a network of Catholic guesthouses founded in 1850 to give travelling apprentices an honest bed, and yes, that lineage is the explanation for the dormitory-like simplicity of the rooms and the frankly exceptional breakfast that has become the hostel's signature on Booking. The address — Gesellenhausstraße 5, Innere Stadt 4020 — is a quiet side street ninety seconds from Casino Linz, twelve minutes from both Hauptplatz and the Hauptbahnhof on foot, and one tram-stop from the Mariendom. A Lidl and a Spar are three minutes away. Limited private parking is available for an extra fee.
Rooms are singles and doubles. All have private shower and toilet, white cotton bed linen, towels, TV, and Geoffrey from Wales — a regular reviewer — flags that the linen is "all of good quality." There are no dorms. Internet is spotty in the upper rooms (Sharon from the United States walked to the lobby for video calls), so factor that in if you're working remote.
The breakfast is the lead. The buffet runs a generous spread of cold cuts, cheeses, bread, pastries, fruit, yogurt, eggs and a barista-style coffee setup that locals score 9.5 in the food-and-beverage subcategory. The breakfast room doubles as an evening hangout — Sonja from Turkey specifically called out using it after dinner for the social space. There's a small bar at the front desk and a 24-hour reception desk, which is genuinely useful for late ÖBB arrivals.
The guests are a different mix from a backpacker hostel — older couples, business travellers from regional Austria, the occasional pilgrimage group walking the Mariendom. It is dry, it is calm, and it is not where you go to find a 2am party. What it offers is the most reliable cleanliness, breakfast and value on Booking's Linz page, with the best central location for the money. If your trip is half culture half overnight, this is the building.
