Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
3 Fontaines is the Brussels hostel you pick when the number next to 'price' is the only number that matters, or when you genuinely want to walk into a forest from your bed. At 28 EUR it's the cheapest usable hostel in the city with a viable rating, and the 64 EUR private twin with en-suite is the best-value private room we've seen in Brussels at any level. The trade-off is real: Auderghem is 20 minutes by metro from the Grand Place, the metro stops running at 00:30, and if you hit bar #4 in Saint-Gรฉry at 01:15 you're walking or taxi-ing back. Pick 3 Fontaines for a quiet weekend with forest walks and daytrips to the European Parliament; skip it if nightlife is on the itinerary or if you have one short day in town and want to maximise walking time around the Grand Place.
๐ฏ Insider Tips
- 1Pair 3 Fontaines with a Saturday-morning walk in the Forรชt de Soignes to the Rouge-Cloรฎtre abbey ruins. 40 minutes out, 40 minutes back, hard to believe you're inside Brussels. Take the Demey metro entrance closest to the forest trail โ signs are only in French.
- 2Last metro line 5 from Gare Centrale back to Demey is around 00:30. Map it before you leave the hostel. Brussels doesn't run night buses on Sundays โ be aware.
- 3The 3-EUR breakfast is OK but the Auderghem Sunday market (10 min walk) has better pastries and Belgian cheese for the same money. Skip the hostel breakfast on Sunday.
- 4Cyclists: the Eurovelo 5 runs directly past the hostel. Free on-street parking for bikes, and the Auderghem cycle link connects to the Forรชt de Soignes trails within 10 minutes.

๐ The Full Story
Auberge des 3 Fontaines sits on the Chaussรฉe de Wavre in Auderghem, the far-southeastern commune of Brussels. It is genuinely suburban: a low-rise hostel surrounded by houses with gardens, a 15-minute walk from the Forรชt de Soignes (the ancient beech forest that wraps around the south of the city), and a 20-minute metro ride on line 5 to Gare Centrale and the Grand Place area.
It exists for one reason: price. 28 EUR gets you a dorm bed in a clean, functional hostel that is usually half-full, runs a 07:00-to-10:00 breakfast (3-EUR supplement, continental), and has a shared kitchen and a quiet common lounge with board games. There's no bar, no walking tour, no Friday pub crawl. The clientele is a genuine mix: European school groups on organised trips, budget cyclists passing through on the Eurovelo 5, and long-stay renovation contractors working on the eastern-ring housing. Staff are small-team and friendly, but English is limited on some shifts โ Dutch and French are safer bets.
What 3 Fontaines gets you that no inside-Pentagon hostel does: a genuine quiet, a night without bar noise, and the chance to walk into an actual European forest in the morning before taking the metro to the Grand Place. What it costs you: every dinner is in the centre, every bar-hop is a 00:15 last-metro decision, and if you lose the metro window it's a 25-EUR taxi back. Pick it for a price-first short stay or an easy forest-plus-city combo; skip it if you want a spontaneous Brussels night out.
