Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
Espak is Tallinn's pragmatic private-room pick, and the thing to know is that it isn't really a hostel โ it's apart-hotel rooms priced like hostel privates. Pick it if you've got a rental car for Pรคrnu or Narva day trips, or if you're the solo traveler who just wants a door, a shower, and a microwave at the end of the night. Skip it if you came to Tallinn for the social-hostel scene โ the building has zero common areas and nobody lingers in the hallway. Tip: the rooms on floors three and four have noticeably better natural light than the ground-floor units, ask when you book.
๐ฏ Insider Tips
- 1Tram 1 from the stop outside runs direct to Viru gate every 6 min
- 2Balti Jaam Market opens at 9am for fresh bread and home-made sauerkraut
- 3Ask for a fourth-floor room โ daylight is worth it in winter
- 4The microwave actually cooks Rimi ready-meals; the โฌ3 chicken leg is a trick everyone learns by night two
๐ฅ Why We Love It
Every room has a private bathroom and kitchenette
Key-less check-in that actually works after midnight
Free parking, genuinely rare for Tallinn budget stays
Telliskivi Creative City five minutes on foot
๐ The Full Story
Espak Hostel is the quiet, privacy-focused budget option in Tallinn โ more apart-hotel than party hostel. The Viadukti 42a location is a short walk from Balti Jaam train station and the Telliskivi Creative City, and tram 1 from the stop outside reaches Viru gate in eight minutes. Free parking is rare for Tallinn budget stays and it's included here on a simple first-come basis.
Every room is a private unit: double bed or twin, private bathroom with shower, AC that actually works in summer, and a kitchenette tucked into the wardrobe with a microwave, kettle, fridge, and a dining table big enough for two. There are no dorms here, so the cost skews toward the couples and solo-traveler crowd looking for a proper door that locks rather than a locker and curtain.
The key-less check-in is genuinely smooth. You get the keycode the morning of arrival and walk in any time after 3pm โ staff respond to WhatsApp messages for issues with a shower or extra towels within ten minutes most days. No bar, no lounge, no organized social scene. For that, the Monks Bunk crawl is twelve minutes away by tram 1 or a โฌ4 Bolt ride. Espak wins when you want to sleep, cook, and save, not drink and mingle.

โEasy key-less check-in. Prompt response from the staff even outside of work hours when I messaged about the kettle. Room was small but spotless and the private bathroom is the real deal here.โ

โClean, comfortable, quiet. Good location if you need to stay in that area โ in fact we always book the same room on our Tallinn weekends now. The kitchenette saves us โฌ40 a day on breakfasts.โ

โCentral, free parking, super easy access. Not flashy but everything works. The self check-in meant I could arrive at midnight after my Pรคrnu drive without any hassle.โ

โVery nice and clean as always. This is my third stay. The Telliskivi walk is five minutes and the train to the airport is around the corner at Balti Jaam. Honestly better value than any downtown hotel.โ
