King Kong Hostel

King Kong sits at Witte de Withstraat 74 — halfway down the most concentrated stretch of bars, restaurants, and late-night spots in Rotterdam. The location is the whole point: at 1 AM when Ballroom and Bar Bazar are closing and you can barely walk, home is 45 seconds away. The building is a converted 1950s storefront with a colorful exterior, a street-level cafe that doubles as the hostel lobby, and four floors of dorms above.

Dorms are 4, 6, and 8-bed, mixed and female-only, with wooden-frame bunks, in-bed curtains, reading lights, and lockers inside the room. Bathrooms are on each floor. The vibe is festival-poster-colorful throughout — think King Kong-themed murals, bright paint, kitsch posters, not minimalist-chic like Sparks.

The ground-floor cafe-bar is open to the public during the day (coffee, small plates, free WiFi) and turns into the hostel's pre-gaming bar from 19:00. Dutch draft beers, house cocktails, a small wine list. The bar has regulars who aren't hostel guests, which gives it a genuine-Rotterdam feel rather than a hostel-bubble feel.

Shared kitchen on the second floor is functional — induction hobs, oven, fridges, coffee machine — but you don't come to King Kong to cook. You come to be three doors down from NRC Bar, one door from Dewi Sri Indonesian, and a 30-second walk from BIRD jazz club.

Quiet hours exist (23:00 to 08:00 on paper) but the reality is that the street outside is loud until 02:00 on weekends, so light sleepers should ask for a back-facing dorm. Reviews consistently note this: 'good for party travelers, not for 23:00 bed timers.'
