HI Évora – Pousada de Juventude
Official Movijovem youth hostel in a renovated centenary building — private bathrooms in every room, family rooms available, four minutes from Praça do Giraldo.
HI Évora – Pousada de Juventude is the official Hostelling International member in Évora, run by Movijovem in a renovated centenary building on Rua Miguel Bombarda. It sits on the north side of the walled centre, four minutes from Praça do Giraldo and three from the Templo Romano. Every room — dorm or private — has a private bathroom inside, which is unusual for the price point (€18 a bed). It's the cheapest viable bed in the historic centre and the only Évora option that takes the HI card discount.
HI Évora is one of 36 official Hostelling International properties in Portugal, run by Movijovem (the federation of Portuguese youth hostels). It occupies a renovated centenary building on Rua Miguel Bombarda — the northern stretch of the historic centre, set back from the tour-bus route through Rua 5 de Outubro but still inside the walls.
The property is large by Évora standards: around 90 beds across mixed and family rooms. Every room has a private bathroom inside, which is uncommon at the €18 bed price point. Configurations run 2-bed twins, 4-bed family/group rooms, and 6-bed mixed dorms. AC, linens and breakfast are included on every rate. The building is wheelchair-accessible — the only one of the five hostels we tried in Évora that has step-free access to its dorms.
The ground-floor common area runs a bar and a sun terrace at the back. Movijovem also offers organised activities — bike tours, cooking classes, the occasional Alentejo cultural class — which is the social-events angle that distinguishes HI from the smaller independent hostels in town. The activity schedule is light in winter and ramps up June through September.
The trade-offs versus the smaller independent hostels: HI Évora is institutional in feel — concrete corridors, white-tiled bathrooms, plain furniture — and the bar isn't as sociable as Old Évora's lounge or the Heaven Inn rooftop. But for €18 with a private bathroom and breakfast included, it's the unbeatable budget anchor in Évora's old town. The HI card gives a further 10% discount.

“The experience was so good, the staff were kind and the facilities look in good condition and clean. I want to highlight Rebeca and Joana — they were generous with information about the city and Alentejo wine country.”
“The location is perfect. It's a youth hostel, so it's a simple and practical stay. Spacious room, clean and a simple breakfast. Park your car at Rossio de São Brás for the cheapest option in the centre.”
“The position. The place was super clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful when I had a problem with my shower — they immediately switched me to another room.”
