§ 01 — Summary

Old Évora Hostel sits inside a Pombaline townhouse on Rua Serpa Pinto, three minutes' walk west of Praça do Giraldo. It's the most social option in the centre — full shared kitchen, sun terrace with outdoor seating, a guitar in the lounge, and continental breakfast included on every rate. Mixed dorms (4-bed and 6-bed) and a couple of private rooms, all with shared bathrooms in the cluster. The 8.3 rating across 412 reviews is built on the kitchen-and-terrace setup that backpackers actually use.

§ 02 — The full story

Old Évora Hostel is a converted Pombaline townhouse on Rua Serpa Pinto, the residential street that runs west from Praça do Giraldo to the Travessa do Barão. Three minutes on foot to Giraldo, four to the Sé cathedral, six to the Capela dos Ossos — well inside the cidade-museu and right on the line where the tourist spine meets the locals' grocery street.

The property is small, around 25 beds across mixed and private rooms. Mixed dorms are 4-bed and 6-bed configurations with shared bathrooms in a cluster on each floor — not ensuite, which is the cost trade-off versus Heaven Inn. Every room has AC, parquet floors and balcony or window views over the inner courtyard. Linens are provided; towels are an extra €2 if you didn't bring your own.

The communal heart of the hostel is the ground-floor lounge and back terrace. The kitchen is fully equipped — induction hob, oven, fridge, kettle, coffee machine — which is unusual for Évora hostels (most don't bother because the city is restaurant-driven). The terrace is set up for outdoor breakfast and evening drinks, with a small ashtray courtyard around the corner for smokers. There's a guitar in the lounge that gets used most evenings.

The trade-offs to know: reception runs 14:00–19:00 only — early check-ins and late check-ins need to be coordinated by message before arrival, and the door is on a code system the rest of the time. The shared bathrooms work fine for the bed count but the morning shower queue runs around 08:30–09:30 in summer.

§ 06 — What travelers say
Netherlands10.0

The location is great, in the centre but close to a hypermarket and the regional bus station. The kitchen is well-equipped. The checkout time is luxurious (12:00) and you can still make use of the kitchen and the lounge after.

There was a guitar to use, a massive boon for travelling musicians. The lounge fills up in the evenings and the staff make you feel at home.
