The Horse Monument Hostel
The smallest hostel on Republic Square — 9.4 rated, family-run, next door to the National Museum with a bathtub in the house.
The Horse Monument Hostel takes its name literally — the Prince Mihailo statue (the 'horse monument' on Republic Square) is 30 seconds out the front door, and so is every central-Belgrade sight you'd want. Tiny (under 15 beds), owner-run, 9.4 rated with a quirky amenity sheet including an actual bathtub.
The Horse Monument is the kind of hostel you book when you've decided the whole point of a hostel is the location and the host, and everything else is bonus. The address — Čika Ljubina 1 — puts you 30 seconds from the Prince Mihailo statue on Republic Square (the titular 'horse monument'), literally next door to the National Museum of Serbia, and within four minutes of Kalemegdan, Knez Mihailova, and the Dorćol bar strip.
It's small — under 15 beds total, spread across a handful of dorms and private rooms. The building is an old Stari Grad apartment with period features (high ceilings, original floors) and one unusual amenity reviewers keep mentioning: a bathtub in the bathroom. In a hostel. That's a first-time Belgrade-hostel quirk worth the 20-second explanation.
Owners run the place themselves. They show up to check you in, remember your name the second night, and help with the CarGo airport transfer booking (it's €18 with their referral). There's no pub crawl, no bar, no party — it's quiet, clean, and deliberately low-key. The top-floor terrace over Čika Ljubina functions as the common room in summer and has the best cheap view of Republic Square in any hostel in Belgrade.
Pros: unbeatable Republic Square location, genuinely family-run feel, the bathtub, 9.4 rating. Cons: small so books out (especially the private doubles in peak), no kitchen outside the micro-kitchen corner, not a social hostel — you'll be meeting people at the bar crawls elsewhere.
