§ 01 — Summary

Cats Hostel San Sebastián is the Donostia outpost of the Cats Hostels chain (Madrid, Lisbon, Porto), set in the residential Antiguo district four blocks behind Ondarreta beach. 8.2 across 3,037 reviews — the most-reviewed hostel in town. Quieter side of the city, real-Donostia vibe, lower price than Centro pod hostels.

§ 02 — The full story

Cats Hostel sits at Paseo de Heriz 38 in Antiguo, the residential west-end neighbourhood between Ondarreta beach and the funicular up Mount Igueldo. The location is the deliberate trade: you are four blocks behind Ondarreta (the smaller, quieter end of La Concha bay), eight minutes' walk to the start of La Concha promenade, and 18 minutes' walk along the seafront into Old Town for pintxos. The neighbourhood itself is real Donostia — local bakeries, family bars, a Sunday farmer's market on the Plaza de Cervantes — not the tourist Old Town windows.

The building is a 1930s townhouse converted by the Cats chain — around 100 beds, modern interiors, big living-room with a balcony that is the only such balcony in any Donostia hostel. Dorms are 4 to 12 beds with curtains, USB ports, in-bed reading lights and corridor lockers. Bathrooms are shared by floor, modern with rain showers. The female-only 4-bed dorm is well-reviewed and runs a few euros more than the mixed equivalent.

Downstairs there is a small bar and lounge with cocktails, beer on tap and a breakfast counter (€8 — the breakfast is the talked-about one, with proper tortilla, fresh croissants and Iberian ham, not the cereal-and-juice average). The chain's signature is the social activity: a pintxos crawl Wed/Fri/Sat 21:00 (€20 with 4 pintxos + 4 drinks), an optional Sunday morning surf shuttle to Zurriola, and a 'Cats Cinema' movie night on Mondays in the lounge.

Who this is for: travellers who want a residential Donostia base, beach-first travellers (Ondarreta is on the doorstep), couples on a budget and anyone who has stayed at a Cats elsewhere and trusts the format. Skip if you must be 5 minutes from Old Town pintxos walking — Cats is 18 minutes along the seafront, which is beautiful at sunset but a real walk back at 1am.

§ 03 — Why we love it
  • 01Living-room balcony is the only Donostia hostel balcony you can sit on with a beer in the evening — locals walk past, sea is one block away
  • 02Breakfast at €8 is the best hostel breakfast in town — proper tortilla, Iberian ham, fresh croissants from the bakery on the corner, not the supermarket cereal default
  • 03Four blocks behind Ondarreta beach (the quieter end of La Concha) — you are at sand in 4 minutes and at La Concha promenade in 8
  • 04Pintxos crawl Wed/Fri/Sat 21:00 — €20 includes 4 pintxos + 4 drinks, runs the Antiguo and Centro local bars rather than tourist Old Town windows
  • 05Female-only 4-bed dorm with curtains and corridor lockers — €3 more than the mixed dorm and consistently well-reviewed by solo women travellers

Very clean, modern, secure and the staff were very helpful — there is an incredible balcony and kitchen. Loved sitting outside in the evening with a beer. Walked along the seafront into Old Town, 18 minutes, beautiful at sunset.

Well located, friendly helpful staff, amazing living room balcony and kitchen. Sleeping was good — curtains and reading lights make a real difference. Did the Wednesday pintxos crawl and made friends for the rest of the week.

Mohamed at the reception was so kind and helpful, made our stay very smooth — special mention on the bus directions and the surf shuttle on Sunday morning to Zurriola.
