Downtown River Hostel
The newest small-format hostel in Centro, Calle San Martín, with around 30 beds, a tight kitchen-and-lounge that pushes guests to actually meet, and the cleanest bunks in the under-€35 bracket.
Downtown River Hostel is the newest small-format hostel in Donostia — opened 2024, around 30 beds total, tucked on Calle San Martín three blocks from the Urumea river. 8.2 across 89 early reviews and rising. Eight-minute walk to Old Town pintxos, ten minutes to La Concha, six minutes to Donostia-Amara Renfe.
Downtown River sits at Calle San Martín 2 in Donostia's Centro, three blocks back from the Urumea river and on the natural walking line between Renfe Amara and the Kursaal bridge. From the door, Parte Vieja is eight minutes' walk north, La Concha is ten minutes west, the Renfe station is six minutes south and the Kursaal bridge into Gros surf-side is six minutes east. It is the most centrally-balanced location of any hostel in town.
The building is a 2024 conversion of a Centro townhouse — small footprint, around 30 beds total, mostly 4 to 6-bed dorms with bunks, in-bed reading lights and curtains, plus two private doubles. Bathrooms are shared by floor and brand-new (the hostel opened only in 2024). Reviewers consistently flag cleanliness as the headline — daily cleaning, fresh linens, the showers actually drain.
The ground floor is one combined kitchen-lounge — small but well-laid-out, with a stovetop, microwave, kettle, fridge and a long communal table that fits twelve. There is no dedicated bar, but the lounge has a coffee corner and a small selection of local craft beer in the fridge (honesty box system, €3 a beer). The intimacy is the social mechanism: at 30 beds you actually meet your roommates over breakfast or dinner, rather than passing them in a 200-bed lobby.
Who this is for: travellers who want a small-hostel feel rather than a chain, light cookers who want to use a kitchen properly, solo travellers staying 2-3 nights who want to make friends without forcing it, and budget travellers who want clean and central without paying €40+ for the polished pod chains. Skip if you need 24h reception (this hostel runs 8am-22:00 staffed, keypad after) or you need 100+ guests for energy.

“Location is perfect, very nice staff, clean — one of the best hostels I have seen. Eight minutes' walk to Old Town pintxos and ten to La Concha — equidistant from everything.”
“It's location is great, a walk away from the center and close to many sightseeing places. The kitchen-lounge is small but everyone uses it, made friends with the dormmates over coffee in the morning.”
“Convenient location, tidy and clean and comfortable dormitory bed. Julian on reception was very helpful with directions and a sidrería booking. The 30-bed small format makes the difference — not a chain feel.”
