§ 01 — Summary

Slottsskogens Hostel sits on Vegagatan, directly across the road from Backpackers Göteborg and at the corner of Slottsskogen park. 7.9 from 495 Booking reviews, dorms from around €28 — the quieter, slightly cheaper Linné alternative with free evening activities and a self-service kitchen.

§ 02 — The full story

Slottsskogens Hostel has been on Vegagatan 21 long enough that locals know it by name — a no-frills classic on the same block as Backpackers Göteborg, with Slottsskogen park literally across the road. The park is Gothenburg's Central Park: pigs and moose in free pens, free open-air concerts in summer, and a 10-minute walk to Linnéplatsen with the Da Matteo cafe and the Saltholmen tram.

The hostel itself is practical over polished. Dorms are clean and plain — bunks, individual reading lights, under-bed storage, no privacy curtains on older rooms. Bathrooms shared by floor, well maintained, with consistent hot water. The kitchen is large and well-equipped and the shared dining area is where the hostel's social life happens — partly because of the free evening programme: fika and hostel tours most nights, plus staff-led walking tours on request, a movie night once or twice a week, and informal 'meet the vikings' chats that guests mention unprompted in reviews.

Breakfast is available for purchase at around 75 SEK. Check-in is 24h with a code after hours, which works. The building is older, so light sleepers should request upper-floor rooms facing the park side rather than Vegagatan — the street gets loud with Backpackers' summer overflow on Friday and Saturday.

The social life here is great — the free evening activities make a difference. I'd come back just for that.

Perfect room size for the four of us. Well connected by bus and tram, the walk to the hostel from the nearest stop is short, and we were at Slottsskogen park in two minutes.

Great location with several supermarkets and lots of restaurants nearby. Friendly staff, free activities to join at night — a real plus for solo travelers.
