STF Hostel Stigbergsliden
STF's sailor's-home hostel on Stigberget hill — private-bathroom dorms and a reliably clean kitchen
STF Hostel Stigbergsliden is the Swedish Tourist Association's Gothenburg outpost, a 19th-century sailor's home turned well-run hostel on Stigberget hill. 8.3 from 1,120 Booking reviews, beds from about €36 — consistent, clean, calm, with private single-use bathrooms and a kitchen guests single out in reviews.
STF Hostel Stigbergsliden is one of the oldest hostels in Gothenburg, housed in a tall 1880s building that once served as a sailor's home for the port workers across the river. The Swedish Tourist Association (STF) took it over decades ago and it's now the archetypal STF property: clean, well-run, slightly institutional, unsurprising in the best possible way.
The location on Stigberget is a five-minute uphill walk from Stigbergstorget — the square with the tram 3/9 stops, the Älvsbaren bar, and a handful of local lunch spots. You're in Majorna, the most lived-in backpacker neighborhood: student-y, bar-heavy on Andra Långgatan, two blocks from Café Husaren in Haga by a different route. Central station is 10 minutes by tram, Järntorget five.
The standout feature is small but real: the shared bathrooms are designed as single-use rooms, each a compact bathroom with shower, toilet, sink, and a door you lock. There's no communal shower row. That gives the hostel an edge with travelers who prefer privacy over the party-dorm experience. The kitchen is fully equipped with multiple hobs, ovens, fridges divided by room, and a bright dining area. Breakfast is available for around 95 SEK (6:30–9:30). Key-card entry replaces a front desk after 22:00.
