The Golden Rooster
Three-minute walk from Skanderbeg with Thursday Albanian cooking nights
A 474-review hostel on Rruga e Barrikadave, three minutes from Skanderbeg Square, with a small but well-used courtyard and a kitchen that runs Albanian cooking nights every Thursday. Most-central budget option after Bearded Dad.
The Golden Rooster sits on Rruga e Barrikadave — three minutes from Skanderbeg Square in the direction of the Pyramid of Tirana. The building is a renovated mid-century house with a small ground-floor courtyard, a sun-catching front terrace, and a kitchen that doubles as the social hub. The Thursday Albanian cooking night — guests pay 8 EUR, learn to make tavë kosi or fërgesë, then eat together — is the hostel's signature.
Location strikes a useful middle: walking distance to Skanderbeg Square in three minutes, to the Pyramid in five, and to Blloku in twelve. You sleep in a quieter residential pocket but you are never more than a 10-minute walk from anything in central Tirana. Pazari i Ri is 7 minutes the other way.
Dorms are 4 to 8 beds with curtains, AC, USB sockets, and the smaller dorms have en-suite bathrooms. The 8-bed shares a hallway bathroom with one other dorm. Soundproofing is good for hallway noise, decent for street-side. Private rooms are converted from the original first-floor bedrooms with original wooden floors.
The vibe is social but more focused on the kitchen than the bar. Guests cook together most evenings, the cooking class fills up Thursday, and the staff runs a Friday night excursion to a Komiteti raki bar that is genuinely fun. The walking tour starts from the lobby every other day.

“The Thursday cooking class was the best activity in any hostel I have stayed at. Made tavë kosi from scratch and ate it with the staff. The location is genuinely three minutes to Skanderbeg.”
“Staff helped me figure out the marshrutka to Skopje, even drew me a map of where the corner is. Saved me a stressful morning. Cooking class was full when I tried to book Tuesday but Thursday I made it.”
“Central, clean, friendly. Courtyard is small and gets crowded at evening peak but the food smells great because everybody is cooking. Came for two nights, stayed four.”
