Skopje Shared KitchenRanked guide

Best Hostels with Shared Kitchens in Skopje

Skopje is a great cooking city for hostel travelers — the Bunjakovec green market is a 5-minute walk from Centar West, ajvar costs 200 MKD a jar, fresh feta is 400 MKD a kilo, and tomatoes in season are practically given away. Seven of our eight hostels have a working shared kitchen; pick by setup. Denica has the most-equipped one (gas, oven, full pots, two fridges, no bunks in the dorms). Skopje Downtown's kitchen is real and central. Hi Skopje and Hostel 42 are mid-tier. Historia, Shanti and central-skopje have functional but smaller kitchens.

§ 01 — Traveler's take
What separates 'cooking hostels' from 'has a hot plate and a fridge' is the equipment quality and the time the kitchen is actually open. Denica's kitchen has sharp knives, a working oven, and two fridges (no contention for space at 18:00). Skopje Downtown's is as well equipped but smaller. The mid-tier kitchens (Hostel 42, Hi Skopje, Historia) handle pasta and basic stir-fry but get crowded between 18:00 and 20:00. Central-skopje and Shanti can do simple meals but you'll need to BYO pots for anything serious.

§ 03 — Tips

Tips for Choosing a Hostel with Shared Kitchen in Skopje

Tip Nº 01

Bunjakovec green market (5 minutes from Hostel Denica, 12 minutes from Macedonia Square) is the cheapest source of vegetables, ajvar, fresh feta, and Macedonian salami — open 7:00 to 18:00 daily, cash only

Tip Nº 02

A whole roast chicken from any pekara is 300-400 MKD and feeds 3-4 people — pick one up on your way back from Mount Vodno for a hostel-kitchen dinner

Tip Nº 03

Macedonian wines (Tikveš, Stobi) are 250-400 MKD a bottle at the Tinex or Vero supermarkets — significantly cheaper than at restaurants and they pair with anything you cook

Tip Nº 04

The oven at Denica is the only one in our selection — book a kitchen slot 19:00-20:00 if you want to roast vegetables or bake (no formal booking, just stake your claim with a pot on the counter at 18:30)
