Our Honest Take
From the Hostelpedia team. No BS, just real advice
Hostel km 0 is the pure Lipscani-base pick — smaller, quieter, cheaper than Popcorn or 5 Stars High, and literally inside the Old Town rather than on its edge. It doesn't have a bar, a pub crawl, or a lobby scene; it has a kitchen, a patio, and an owner who actually answers his email. Pick this hostel if you're doing Bucharest as a 2–3 night stop, want to be five minutes from Control and Fratelli, and plan to cook at least one meal. Our tip: book the attic dorm over the ground-floor room — the Old Town rooftop view at sunset is the hostel's secret weapon.
🎯 Insider Tips
- 1The kitchen has a full stovetop and cookware — do your Mega Image run (2 min away) on arrival; cooking even one pasta night saves €8+ versus eating at Caru' cu Bere.
- 2The attic dorm has the rooftop view for sunset (aim for the bed by the dormer window); the ground-floor room is quieter at 02:00 when Lipscani closes.
- 3No 24-hour reception — coordinate late check-in with the owner via the Booking message thread, he responds in under an hour on most days.
- 4For Lipscani nightlife, walk south on Strada Stelea Spătarul to Smârdan (1 min) — it's the quietest approach and avoids the Bratianu pedestrian crowds.
🔥 Why We Love It
8.5 from 190 reviews, highest-rated hostel physically inside Lipscani's pedestrian ring
Shared kitchen with real stovetop and fridge — cheapest way to do Lipscani without eating out every meal
Attic flat location means rooftop views over the Old Town from the top-floor dorm window
Owner-run with sub-hour email response times; Mega Image 2 min away for cooking runs
📖 The Full Story
Hostel km 0 is the attic-flat hostel above the third entrance of a residential building on Strada Stelea Spătarul, one minute's walk from Bulevardul Brătianu and four minutes from Stavropoleos Church. You're physically inside Lipscani — not adjacent, not "nearby", actually on a side street off the main pedestrian zone — which makes this the most centrally located hostel in Bucharest that still sells dorm beds at €14 a night.
The setup is small and owner-run: two or three dorms (4-bed mixed and 6-bed mixed) plus private double rooms, with air-conditioning in every room, hardwood floors, and shared bathrooms (one per floor). The kitchen is the real draw — a full stovetop, fridge, and set of kitchenware, which means you can buy fresh produce at Obor on Sunday morning and cook it yourself. Very few Lipscani-central hostels have this; most default to "go out and eat" which adds €10–15/day to a budget trip.
The garden patio and outdoor dining area behind the building is where guests tend to linger on warm evenings — a pack of Ursus from Mega Image (2 minutes away), the patio, and the sound of Lipscani bars three streets over makes this the cheapest way to do the Old Town social scene without paying Lipscani hostel prices. The owner doubles as a tour contact — quick email responses, and will point you at Free Walking Tour departure points without upselling.
Caveat: it's an attic flat in a residential building, so there's no 24-hour reception, no bar downstairs, no daily walking tours departing from the lobby. This is a base camp, not a social hub. If you want Popcorn-level social calendar, look elsewhere. But if you want to sleep 4 minutes from the Old Town bars and wake up 5 minutes from Piața Universității metro for €14, this is the Bucharest hostel.
