“I stayed at Kolpinghaus for 3 nights in late August 2025 — Festival weeks — and used the terrace every evening. The setup is small — maybe 8 tables, 25 seats — but the position above the Salzach with the Festung visible through the trees is the kind of view that justifies the €4 Stiegl. Night 1 I shared a table with two German cyclists doing the Mozart Cycle Path (Salzburg-Vienna). Night 2 was solo with a kindle. Night 3 I walked 12 min south to Augustiner Bräu Mülln and had a stein in the chestnut garden, then back to the terrace at 22h for one last Aperol spritz before bed. The Kolpinghaus terrace closes at 22:30 — perfect timing for the last drink of the evening.”

Tips for Choosing a Hostel with Rooftop Bar in Salzburg

Tip Nº 01

Kolpinghaus's terrace closes at 22:30 by Itzling residential noise law — the indoor bar stays open until 22h. Reverse the timing: terrace 17-22:30, then nothing later. For drinks past midnight, walk to Augustiner Bräu Mülln before 22h or to Steinterrasse on the north bank.

Hostel Salzburg-Wals's sun terrace catches direct sun until about 19:30 in summer. If you want shade for an early apéro, ask for a garden table (not the terrace) — the chestnut tree covers most of the garden seating after 17h.

Tip Nº 03

Both hostel terraces are at residential addresses. Don't expect loud music, DJ sets or party energy — these are sundown-aperitif terraces, not Vienna rooftop clubs. If that's the vibe you want, walk to Steinterrasse atop Hotel Stein on the north bank (€12 cocktails, dress code, but the Old Town view is the best in Salzburg).
